Charlotte County Appoints Dynamic New Leader to Drive Economic Growth

Charlotte County Selects New Economic Development Director

Charlotte County has appointed Kay Tracy as its new Economic Development Director, a decision made swiftly following the resignation of Dave Gammon on August 16. During a board meeting held on August 19, the county commissioners voted to fill the vacancy and granted Tracy a 5% raise to enhance her contract negotiations.

Previously, Gammon drew an annual salary of $135,345, while Tracy will commence her role at a salary of $96,470. This change marks a shift in the landscape of economic leadership in Charlotte County, where residents hope for revitalized strategies aimed at fostering sustainable growth.

As part of a broader agenda, commissioners added Gammon’s resignation to their existing plans, which also included budgetary discussions and the strategic transition from septic to sewer systems in Cape Haze—an environmental update vital for the community’s development.

The board engaged in discussions regarding organizational changes following Gammon’s departure, considering a charter amendment to be evaluated by voters in the upcoming November election. This amendment could potentially position an assistant county commissioner to supervise the Office of Economic Development, which would mark a significant shift towards accountability and transparency.

Tracy, now the fifth director in twelve years, stands poised to bridge the evident communication gaps experienced in previous administrations. Recent talks hint at her commitment to increasing interaction between the Office of Economic Development and county officials, sparking hope among commissioners who previously expressed dissatisfaction with prior communication inefficiencies.

While some commissioners felt uncertain about Tracy’s qualifications, she assured them of her dedication to direct interactions with administration. “My ensemble of priorities includes fostering economic diversification by stabilizing our current businesses and attracting new industries that withstand economic downturns,” she stated passionately.

Tracy’s approach reflects a growing awareness of the need for strategic planning, seeking collaborations with local educational institutions to cultivate a skilled workforce—an endeavor particularly relevant in today’s economy, which fluctuates with rapid technological advancements and global market changes. She envisions developing a robust economic ecosystem where educational partnerships are central, establishing links with local businesses like Luminar Technologies and Charlotte State Bank.

She highlighted the importance of aligning with investors who are not only looking for immediate profits but also aspire to nurture projects that benefit the entire community. “My vision incorporates our infrastructure, investments, and targeted industries—essential components of a thriving economy that prioritizes sustainability,” she elaborated, resonating with the board members eager to see positive changes.

Excitingly, her prior tenure as the business recruitment manager for over two decades provides her with foundational insights necessary to tackle current challenges affecting Charlotte County’s economic landscape. As the board prepares to finalize her formal contract and salary during the upcoming meeting on September 10, hope abounds for a new chapter that not only attracts businesses but also breathes life into the local economy.
