Lee Commissioners Greenlight .9 Billion Initiative to Rebuild Homes After Natural Disasters!

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Lee Commissioners have taken a remarkable step by approving $5.9 million in state funds aimed at supporting households affected by the destructive forces of nature. This decision comes at a critical time, as communities strive to rebuild and heal from the recent calamities of hurricanes, tornadoes, and flooding.

The State Housing Initiatives Partnership serves as a lifeline for housing development organizations, helping families in Lee County who have suffered from these unforeseen events. The allocated funds will make a significant difference by covering essential needs such as:

  • Down payments
  • Emergency home repairs and rehabilitation for owner-occupied residences
  • Mortgage costs
  • Insurance deductibles
  • Rental expenses

This program, bolstered by state funding, is meticulously guided by the Local Housing Assistance Plan (LHAP). This plan empowers Lee County to activate the Disaster Assistance Strategy promptly following a disaster declared by an Executive Order. Residents are set to benefit from a firmly structured approach that prioritizes their well-being.

A diverse array of agencies will be entrusted with the responsibility of distributing these funds, each playing a vital role in the recovery of affected households:

  • Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties, Inc.
    • $1,691,357 – This funding will provide down payment assistance to at least 14 very low- and low-income families, including a focus on three households with special needs.
  • Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay
    • $1,000,000 – This allocation will support the rehabilitation of homes for a minimum of 20 very low- and low-income families, with special attention given to two households with special needs.
  • Lee County Housing Development Corporation.
    • $900,000 – Aimed at offering down payment assistance to at least seven very low- and low-income households, while also addressing the needs of two households with special needs.
    • $1,192,714 – For owner-occupied rehabilitation, targeting a minimum of 10 very low- and low-income families, focusing on those with five special needs households.
    • $835,585 – Mortgage and rental assistance for a minimum of 33 very low- and low-income residencies, prioritizing those with special needs.
  • Center for Independent Living Gulf Coast
    • $290,000 – Dedicated to owner-occupied rehabilitation for at least three very low- and low-income households, ensuring support for those with special needs.

What stands out in this initiative is the absence of any matching requirement for either Lee County or the applicants seeking assistance through the SHIP funds. This highlights the commitment to providing immediate and effective support without additional burdens on those already facing challenges.

For those wishing to explore these assistance programs further, further details can be found at lee county’s official site or by calling 239-533-8585. The support afforded to these households signifies a collective resilience, reshaping lives and rebuilding communities in the face of adversity.
