Kansas Family Inspires Community by Spreading Kindness During Dad’s Cancer Fight

A Kansas family gives back to the community amid a father’s cancer battle, embodying resilience and compassion during a holiday season that demands both.

“This has been such a special time, and we really couldn’t have done all of this without the community,” Shawn Holiday, co-owner and wife of Doug Holiday, recalled, reflecting on their cherished family tradition. “Our boys, this is all they’ve ever known since they were little.”

A Legacy of Giving: The Holiday Family’s Journey

Doug and Shawn Holiday established their beloved barbecue restaurant, Bigg’s BBQ, in Lawrence, Kansas, back in 2004. It was a year that marked not just a business opening but the beginning of an inspiring community endeavor. The First United Methodist Church reached out, seeking assistance with a noble goal: providing meals for those less fortunate on Christmas Eve.

Serving Love on Christmas Eve

“Since our inaugural effort in 2004, we’ve made it our family tradition to prepare meals on Christmas Eve,” Shawn explained, her voice tinged with emotion. They gather the turkeys, clean them, and prepare them for the smoker, often working through the night if the weather turns harsh. “It’s a labor of love that binds us together,” she said, a subtle smile playing on her lips.

This year, a significant milestone unfolds—their 21st annual preparation of meals for the church. Doug proudly shared, “We’ve embarked on this journey for two decades, cooking over 1,300 turkeys and feeding more than 20,000 of our community members.” A chuckle escaped him, a clear sign of pride in their unyielding commitment.

Challenges Faced with Courage

However, this Christmas feels different. Doug, a three-time cancer survivor, is now battling prostate cancer. Yet, he remains undeterred. “You just got to keep moving forward,” he said, reflecting on the challenges that have shaped his family’s shared memories. Despite the difficulties, the warmth felt within the bustling restaurant confirms their spirits are unbroken.

Turkey prep for Christmas Day

Doug’s earlier battles with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and melanoma seemed to fortify his resolve. He admitted, “Despite everything, these moments with my family and community are what bring me joy each holiday season.” Tears welled up as he spoke about his sons, Seth, Jacob, and Ben, who have always lent a hand, showing up every year to reinforce the family legacy.

A Community United in Kindness

Shawn highlighted a growing need among the Lawrence community. “The demand for meals has been increasing,” she remarked, feeling amazed at the unwavering support their efforts receive each year. “Even when personal challenges arise, like Doug’s health, we feel an immense duty to serve.”

This initiative is more than just a family tradition; it embodies a community fabric. “Customers even contribute, bringing turkeys and bags filled with kindness,” Shawn noted, speaking of the beautiful collaboration that strengthens their efforts. “It truly showcases the incredible spirit of the people in Lawrence.”

Empowerment Through Family Giving

Doug reflected on the dynamic transformation from when they began this venture. “Initially, it took us hours to prep the turkeys. Now, with their growth and experience, it is far quicker,” he shared. The joy felt in those moments resonates long after the day fades, marking another holiday season passed with purpose and unity. “It’s a profound satisfaction seeing my sons engaged in this work,” Doug added, an undeniable pride shining through.

The Holiday family holds an open invitation for anyone wishing to support their community dinner by donating to the First United Methodist Church of Lawrence, Kansas, or the American Cancer Society. It stands as a reminder that even amid hardship, hope and kindness can prevail. A random fact—Kansas is known as the Sunflower State, a fitting symbol for the generosity that flourishes within it.
