Reflecting on a Year in Basketball: Two Ukrainian Players Share Their Journey in SWFL
Two girls’ hoops players from Ukraine reflect on their transformative year in Southwest Florida. Sasha Rubanova and Sonia Kiritsa have found not only themselves on the court but also a sense of belonging far from their home. This year, they both grew in ways they never anticipated, facing challenges that tested their resilience against the backdrop of a world in turmoil.
Building Confidence Through Adversity
As Sasha expressed, “I would say confidence in society has blossomed. The first year felt isolating, away from everything familiar. Now, it’s much easier to connect.” Her words echo the silent battles many face, revealing her journey from solitude to community. The delicate dance between heartache and strength unfolds in the rhythm of their lives.
Sonia shared her progress with the language barrier, “My English is much better now. Navigating school, basketball practices, and interviews has become less daunting.” This newfound ability suddenly opens doors, transforming daunting interactions into opportunities. These small victories hold significant weight in her world, anchoring her in the present while tethered by thoughts of home.
A Shared Journey Amidst Life’s Challenges
WINK News initially introduced their stories, detailing their arrival in Sunny Southwest Florida to escape the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. From Lely High School to their current journey at Seacrest Country Day School, both young women express gratitude for the support of their host family, who remain a constant source of comfort amidst trials. Even as Sasha thrives on the court, Sonia wrestles with recovery from a torn ACL, illustrating the fragility of dreams in the sports arena.
For Sonia, significant growth has emerged from learning to cope with feelings of loss and longing for family. “Don’t focus on things that make you feel sad. I didn’t realize how much I was consumed by thoughts of family and last year until they became an obstacle,” she reflected. This includes avoiding the sadness that stems from separation, allowing for growth and connection with what surrounds her.
Support from Coaches and Community
Nikita Carty, the girls’ basketball head coach, observes their infectious spirit, noting, “They have huge hearts and light up the gym with their smiles. Basketball serves as a sanctuary where they can escape the weight of their worries.” The sport becomes more than just a game; it transforms into an emotional refuge, reminding them of joy amidst uncertainty.
The reality of missing family looms large, yet both young women prepare to reunite with their loved ones this coming May. Their hearts brim with excitement and anxiety. “It feels like God heard my prayers at night, yearning to go home finally,” Sonia confided, her voice filled with hope and determination.
Reflecting on their journey is a testament to the power of perseverance in the face of adversity. Their year in Florida symbolizes not only a refuge but also growth, hope, and the promise of brighter days ahead.
