Drew Barrymore Reflects: Martha Stewart ‘Doesn’t Dislike’ Her After Viral Interview Moment
Nearly three months have passed since Drew Barrymore’s interview with Martha Stewart sparked a flurry of online discussions, particularly after the lifestyle icon playfully pushed Barrymore away during their exchange. Barrymore, aged 49, recently shared her thoughts on that now-infamous moment.
During a guest appearance on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” Barrymore candidly addressed the awkwardness that ensued during a November episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show,” providing context for what transpired.
“I think she was just teasing,” Barrymore noted, highlighting how social media may have misinterpreted the light-hearted exchange. “The internet just misunderstood the moment and ran with it,” she explained thoughtfully.
“I’ve never been able to say this before with confidence, but I can now, I think Martha really does like me,” Barrymore reflected, revealing her previous insecurities in their relationship. “When I was first getting to know her, I was like, ‘I don’t think she likes me.’ But I think I broke through … she doesn’t dislike me.”
Known for her distinctive interviewing style, Barrymore often seeks to create an intimate connection with her guests. This approach includes sitting closely and sharing physical gestures, like touching their arms or holding their hands. However, during Stewart’s appearance the previous year, Barrymore’s closeness appeared to unsettle the celebrated author and businesswoman.
In that particular segment, Barrymore leaned in and inquired about what made Stewart feel “soft and gooey.” The moment became slightly awkward as Barrymore playfully stuck her own finger in her mouth while leaning closer.
Stewart’s confused response of “Treatment,” only added to the comedic tension, leading Barrymore to interpret it as a conversation about “soft and gooey treatment.” Their banter became tinged with humor as Stewart confirmed, “Yes, that’s nice,” but as things progressed, Stewart, while maintaining her playful demeanor, pushed Barrymore back onto the couch, stating, “You’re the wrong gender.”
Barrymore responded with playful acceptance while laying back and laughing, juxtaposing the moment with a humorous remark about her romantic prospects: “The way it’s going with men though, Martha, I’m not so sure anymore.”
As the new season approaches, Barrymore acknowledges her unique interview style and expressed a commitment to allowing her guests a bit more personal space. “I’ll try to practice physical distance, which is not my strong point,” she shared with Entertainment Tonight back in August.
“Do you know how hard the pandemic was for me? I was alone in a studio by myself! I like to be around people! [It’s] not everyone’s favorite, but I’m sorry to those people,” she added earnestly, reflecting not just on her personal experiences but on the universal longing for connection that resonated throughout the pandemic. With this perspective, Barrymore demonstrates how humor and introspection can coexist, enriching her interviews and inviting audiences to engage on a more personal level.
This blend of humor and sincerity not only exemplifies Barrymore’s charm but also invites her viewers to consider their own relationships, highlighting that while misunderstandings may arise, the essence of connection remains alive and well, even in the most unexpected of circumstances.
