Transforming Sanibel: How the Elevate Florida Program is Empowering Homeowners to Raise Their Homes!

ELEVATE FLORIDA PROGRAM HELPS SANIBEL HOMEOWNERS RAISE HOMES AND REDUCE FLOOD RISK. This initiative brings a sigh of relief to many in the community, especially in the aftermath of devastating storm surges. With floodwaters capable of wreaking havoc in just hours, the state’s new program aims to cover as much as 75% of the costs associated with elevating homes, reinforcing structures, or implementing wind protection measures.

Elevate Florida program helps Sanibel homeowners raise homes and reduce flood risk

Homeowners in Florida, from single-family houses to townhomes and condos, are eligible for this program—even if they have not previously experienced flooding. Some residents of Sanibel have already taken proactive steps to elevate their homes following Hurricane Ian, mindful of future threats. The conversation among residents has shifted to preparedness, with many contemplating the need to safeguard against three to four feet of potential storm surge, as expressed by local homeowner Mary O’Neill.

Help with Costs

While this program covers a significant portion of the expenses, homeowners will still need to shoulder up to 25% of the costs. For many, this equates to a substantial financial burden. According to Maria Espinoza, the Executive Director of FISH of SANCAP, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting homeowners, elevation costs can fluctuate between $50,000 and $150,000, heavily influenced by the home’s design and structural integrity.

Although those figures may appear daunting, Espinoza emphasizes a crucial point: investing in elevation now can serve as a financial shield against more severe consequences later. Without this preventive measure, a devastating storm could lead to far more costly complete rebuilds. Moreover, there are options through the National Flood Insurance Program that can alleviate the homeowner’s financial responsibilities.

“Securing up to 75% assistance is immensely beneficial,” Espinoza noted. “We’re also working with local partners to address that remaining 25%, ensuring it doesn’t act as a barrier for residents.”

How to Apply

Since the application portal recently opened, FISH of SANCAP has seen an influx of inquiries from homeowners eager to fortify their properties. Daily calls have ranged from 13 to 20, illustrating the urgency felt by many. Those looking to participate must meet a few key requirements:

  • Own a home in Florida
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Meet the program requirements

Additionally, the program offers temporary housing support during construction—an essential consideration for those who are deeply rooted in their community.

Act Fast: Limited Funding Available

FISH of SANCAP urges homeowners not to procrastinate in submitting applications as the funding is limited and could diminish rapidly. For those interested in fortifying their homes, detailed information and the application process can be found at Elevate Florida’s portal, or they can call 877-ELEV8FL (877-353-8835). Local support from FISH of SANCAP is also available at (239) 472-4775.

This initiative not only aims to uplift homes literally but also serves as a reminder of the resilience and fortitude of the Sanibel community. With collective action, they are preparing to face whatever nature may bring next—proving that while storm surges are formidable, so too is their spirit and determination to protect what they hold dear.
