Five FSW Buccaneers Secure Their Future in Division I Sports

Five Florida Southwestern Buccaneers signed to continue their athletic and academic careers on Friday, and two stellar volleyball players, Abby Toeniskoetter and Julija Grubisic Cabo, are making a remarkable move to Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). They are set to reunite with their former coach, Thais Baziquetto Allen, who has taken the helm of the Eagles’ program.

A Sense of Home and Belonging

As they prepare for this new chapter, Grubisic Cabo shared her thoughts on the opportunity, saying, “The program has an amazing history. I believe Coach Thais can take them much further. Having played under her, I know her methods and dedication; I am confident in her vision for the program.” It’s a sentiment echoed by Toeniskoetter; “I absolutely love her and love playing for her,” she remarked, her voice filled with assurance.

Abby’s prowess on the court is undeniable. With two national championships under her belt and a First Team All-American title last season, she reflects warmly: “Coming in, I had no idea the impact that everyone here would make on me. I wouldn’t change a thing about how everything unfolded.” Her humble spirit and gratitude are heartwarming, underscoring the importance of community and teamwork in the world of sports.

Achievements Worth Celebrating

Grubisic Cabo’s accomplishments are equally impressive. Named the NJCAA Division I Player of the Year and the National Championship MVP, she carries not just the accolades but the memories of a place she calls home away from home. “I’m thrilled to be so close to this school because it holds a special place in my heart,” she said, expressing her excitement for the journey ahead and her intent to support her former teammates.

But their story doesn’t end there. Their teammates are also moving on to bright prospects, with Camila Brandalise signing with Virginia Tech, Nina Boledovicova heading to Virginia Commonwealth, and women’s basketball player Georgi Buzzetti committing to the University of North Florida. These transitions mark a significant moment for each athlete, a testament to their hard work and dedication.

A Community That Inspires

The camaraderie formed at FSW extends beyond competition; it fosters a sense of family. Local businesses, like the popular Italian eatery, Dilettante, have always supported the athletes, creating an environment where young talent thrives. This community spirit is a notable factor that contributes to the growth and development of student-athletes, shaping not just their skills but their lives.

As these athletes prepare to don new colors and face fresh challenges, their journey is infused with hope and anticipation. The path ahead is filled with possibilities, and for each player, the end of one chapter is simply the beginning of another. Reflecting on their time at FSW, it’s clear that the bonds formed and lessons learned will forever shape their identity, both on and off the court.
