Atlanta Dream Lands FGCU Coach, Setting Stage for a New Era in Women’s Basketball

The Atlanta Dream has hired long-time FGCU coach Karl Smesko to lead the team, marking an exciting new chapter for both the franchise and the accomplished coach.

On Wednesday morning, FGCU officially announced Smesko’s move to the WNBA, a decision that has reverberated through the basketball community.

Having transformed FGCU into a formidable NCAA tournament contender, Smesko boasts the third-highest winning percentage in women’s college basketball history.

In 2002, he began the monumental task of erecting the FGCU women’s basketball program from its humble Division II beginnings. In an impressive debut, he led the Eagles to a stunning 30-1 record.

Smesko remained at the helm as FGCU transitioned into NCAA Division I, joining the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2007. During this time, the Eagles experienced a meteoric rise, winning an astounding 84 of their first 85 conference home games.

Consistently, Smesko’s teams won at least 20 games each season, celebrating a remarkable seven campaigns with 30 or more victories.

Over his 23-year tenure, FGCU became the winningest Division I program in college basketball history, garnering an impressive all-time winning percentage of .845.

FGCU Welcomes New Leadership with Chelsea Lyles

Following Smesko’s departure, Chelsea Lyles, a long-time associate head coach, has been appointed as the second head coach in FGCU program history.

A 2010 graduate of FGCU and former player under Smesko, Lyles’ rise through the program is a testament to her dedication and hard work. She progressed from a student assistant to the leader of the program.

“I’m grateful to be the coach of a place that I loved and respected since I was 20 years old,” Lyles reflected, embodying the sentiment of commitment and passion.

Lyles took charge on Wednesday, directly following Smesko’s move to coach the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA. This transition marks a pivotal moment for FGCU, echoing the cycle of growth and opportunity within the sport.

A Legacy of Mentorship and Friendship

“Not only has he been a great mentor and boss, but he’s also a great friend of mine,” Lyles expressed, emphasizing the strong bond they share. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him.”

Lyles’ experience under Smesko informs her approach to coaching. “He taught me the value of hard work. To be successful at this job, I’m going to have to work hard. He displayed that every single day,” she shared.

FGCU Athletic Director Colin Hargis acknowledges the seamless fit Lyles brings to the program, stating that she was the first and only person he considered for the position.

“She’s an incredible teammate and has been integral to building the culture here. Chelsea is undoubtedly the right choice to lead this program,” Hargis noted.

As Lyles steps into this pivotal role, she aims to uphold the standard of success established by Smesko. “We need to come together to make this season special. The expectations have not changed, and we remain committed to excellence,” she affirmed.

In a conversation with WINK Sports, Smesko praised Lyles as an outstanding coach and individual, confident she will achieve remarkable things for FGCU. It’s a shared vision—one that weaves together past legacies and future aspirations in the fabric of college basketball.

Interestingly, one fun fact to note is that Florida Gulf Coast University, known for its vibrant spirit, has developed a strong local business community that continuously supports its athletic programs, creating a nurturing environment for its athletes to flourish.
