Catholic school celebrates new $7 million gymnasium
Catholic school celebrates new $7 million gymnasium, a shining milestone for St. Charles Borromeo School. Set amid the verdant landscapes of Port Charlotte, this modern facility stands as a beacon of hope and growth. As students step into this freshly inaugurated space, the echoes of laughter and camaraderie fill the air, signifying a new chapter for the community.
On the first day back to school, the thrill of anticipation pulsated throughout the halls as a ribbon was cut, transforming a long-held dream into reality. Father John Fitch, who leads the school with passion and dedication, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the benefactors whose generosity made this endeavor possible. “They did this for you; they gave up their hard-earned wages,” he reminded the eager students. This simple gratitude resonated deeply, urging young hearts to reflect on the value of kindness in their lives.
The inception of this gymnasium was not a spontaneous affair; it originated nearly twenty-five years ago. Initial plans set aside proceeds from a church renovation in the 1990s for this goal. Yet, the universe had different plans, and financial constraints provided roadblocks along the way. Until now, students had endured the sweltering Florida sun during outdoor activities, a daily contest against the weather’s capriciousness.
“Before the gym, at this time of the year it’s pretty much oppressive,” Father Fitch recalled, emphasizing how the lack of a suitable space hindered students’ physical activity. The anticipation of this gym grew, culminating in a fundraising campaign ignited in December 2019. One particularly generous donor, choosing to remain in the shadows, made a remarkable contribution of $1 million to honor his parents, furthering the cause of a brighter future for students.
The grand gymnasium, named the James & Catherine Tighe Sheehy Sports and Education Complex, now serves as a physical embodiment of hope and community spirit. It emerged from trials—the pandemic’s impact and rising costs challenged the project’s viability. Ultimately, the construction bill climbed to $7 million, with meaningful fundraising efforts still ongoing.
This new facility is more than just a gym; it serves as a sanctuary where students can foster their physical and intellectual growth. The 15,017-square-foot building features both a state-of-the-art gymnasium and a science lab, inviting students to explore not just sports, but creativity through robotics and art—integral components of the school’s STREAM curriculum.
As the ribbon was cut, the joyous atmosphere exploded with the support and enthusiasm of cheering staff and students. Athletic Director Larry “Coach” Taylor, dressed as a Crusader, ignited excitement through a basketball competition, marking every score with bursts of blue confetti—a small remembrance of victory and joy.
St. Charles Borromeo School is evolving, continuing its proud commitment to the principles of education, spirituality, and community. “St. Charles is a STREAM school,” Father Fitch emphasized, highlighting the integration of science, technology, religion, engineering, art, and mathematics in their curriculum. This new gymnasium represents more than just a space; it embodies the unwavering hope and dreams of a generation, a place where students will not only play but also learn to navigate life’s challenges together. Amid the shouts of excitement and the rhythmic pulse of dance music, one cannot help but reflect on the significance of this achievement—a celebration, not just of a building, but of a bright future.
