Celebrating a Beloved Charlotte County Deputy: Family, Dedication, and a Passion for Cuban Coffee

Charlotte County deputy remembered for love of family, work & Cuban coffee, Sgt. Elio Diaz leaves behind a legacy that resonates deeply within the community he served. His tragic passing, following a traffic stop on Sunday, marks not merely the loss of a law enforcement officer but the departure of a vibrant soul who cherished life in every facet.

Career:

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office proudly acknowledges Diaz’s dedication over his 11 years, culminating in his promotion to Corporal in January 2020. With a steady commitment, he excelled in various roles, from Road Patrol and Investigations to specialized teams like STAR (Strategic Target Area Response) and the Crisis Negotiations Team.

In recognition of his hard work, Diaz was honored as Law Enforcement Member of the Month in December 2015 and achieved the status of Member of the Quarter twice in 2023. His unwavering devotion to duty led Sheriff Bill Prummell to posthumously promote him to Sergeant, a powerful testament to his impact before his untimely end.

Personal Life:

Sgt. Elio Diaz was not just an officer; he was a loving husband and father of four. Known for his infectious laughter, he had a knack for brightening the most challenging days. His colleagues fondly recall the buzz in the office when he brought in his homemade Cuban coffee—an aroma that would draw people in like moths to a flame. Much like a cherished family recipe, it was his way of nurturing connections among friends and coworkers.

Diaz’s commitment extended beyond the badge. He participated annually in the heartwarming “Shop With A Cop” event, bringing joy to local children, illustrating a passion for community engagement. Just a week before his death, he joined in this beautiful tradition, reinforcing the idea that his love for his job was only matched by his affection for his family.

Community Impact:

The deep sorrow felt for Diaz has united the community, sparking a reflection on the fragility of life. Charlotte County Commissioner Bill Truex expressed a heartfelt sentiment, saying he felt “sick to my stomach” upon learning of Diaz’s death. Though he had met Diaz only a couple of times, the impact he had on the community was clear, a reminder that sometimes the strongest bonds are formed through shared experiences.

Truex recalled previous losses within the sheriff’s office, invoking memories of Deputy Mike Wilson’s sacrifice in 2013. He emphasized the need for the community to rally together, not just in remembrance but to support the family left behind. Plans to honor Diaz are underway, rooted in respect and grace as Truex aims to confer with Diaz’s family and Sheriff Prummell on an appropriate tribute.

“I want to make sure that we honor Corporal Diaz in some manner,” he stated, embodying the collective grief that now blankets the community. “We’re here to help, and I just want to keep sending up prayers for the family.”

On Sunday night, Sheriff Bill Prummell tearfully shared the heartbreaking news of Diaz’s passing. His voice echoed the sentiment of loss felt by many, weaving a tapestry of sorrow throughout the community.
