Charlotte Economic Development Director Steps Down, Says ‘It’s Time to Move On’

Charlotte Economic Development director Dave Gammon announced his resignation on August 9, sparking discussions and reflections throughout the community. The resignation, initially meant to take effect on August 12, became effective immediately, signaling a significant shift for the economic landscape of Charlotte County.

Upon the Board of County Commissioners addressing his resignation at a special meeting scheduled for August 19, it became clear that the departure was more than just procedural; it marked the end of an era. While the agenda originally focused on other pressing issues, such as a capital projects review and updates on the Cape Haze septic-to-sewer project, Gammon’s exit overshadowed these discussions.

When reflecting on his time in the role, Gammon expressed a sense of fulfillment. He noted feeling “ready to move on after eight years,” proud of the significant accomplishments that characterized his tenure since 2019. His leadership sparked growth, particularly at Enterprise Charlotte Airport Park (ECAP) in Punta Gorda. Under his guidance, the park has seen its square footage double, transitioning from a vision to a blossoming reality.

In May, during a presentation before the Charlotte County Airport Authority, Gammon illustrated the extensive development, showcasing 2.5 million square feet completed and plans for an additional 1.5 million. This narrative of growth resonates with those who cherish the burgeoning business ecosystem in Charlotte County.

His vision also led to the vital mixed-use zoning that facilitated the redevelopment of Promenades Mall, now transformed into Promenades at Parkside. What was once a retail hub built in 1976 is on track to become Port Charlotte’s new centerpiece, a dynamic downtown anticipated to encompass over 500,000 square feet of varied commercial spaces.

This initiative includes not just retail and office spaces, but also plans for market-rate apartments and a hotel, providing a gathering spot for community members after a day of work or leisure. The vision flows beyond construction; it’s about people, connections, and a lifestyle that resonates with the heart of Port Charlotte.

Moreover, Gammon championed the establishment of a new hangar and classroom facility for the Charlotte Technical College’s Airframe and Powerplant program. This initiative, situated on Punta Gorda Airport land, highlights a commitment not just to economic growth but also to education and skill development for the future workforce.

Starting his journey in 2016 within business recruitment, Gammon transitioned to interim director in 2018, finally assuming the role of director in 2019. His timeline embodies growth, and for some, he represents a beacon of hope for what local leadership can achieve.

Reflecting on the growth of ECAP, Gammon recalled when the county hired a marketing firm to create a vision video, with the aim of mapping out ECAP’s future potential. “It’s happened now,” he reminisced. “Before, people didn’t know what Charlotte County was; ECAP put Charlotte County on the map.” His deep understanding of the local economy and connections with stakeholders have made a lasting impact.

An uncertain future lies ahead for Gammon, who mentioned he has not yet decided on his next steps. “I’m looking for the next opportunity,” he quipped, alluding to the flexibility he enjoys with his realtor wife, Susan. Their shared journey through this transition reflects the adaptability needed in today’s ever-changing economic climate.

The Board of County Commissioners meeting on August 19 will be a chance for stakeholders to gather, reflect, and perhaps discuss the legacy of Gammon’s contributions within the context of Charlotte County’s bright future.
