‘Days of Our Lives’ Star Passes Away After Battling Pancreatic Cancer

Drake Hogestyn: A Legacy Remembered

“Days of our Lives” veteran actor Drake Hogestyn has passed away, one day before what would have been his 71st birthday.

The family of the longtime soap star, who had appeared in nearly 4,300 episodes, shared a statement on the show’s social media Saturday evening.

“It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn. He was thrown the curve ball of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but he faced the challenge with incredible strength and determination. After putting up an unbelievable fight, he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones.”

“He was the most amazing husband, father, papa, and actor. He loved performing for the Days audience and sharing the stage with the greatest cast, crew, and production team in the business,” the family wrote.

A Storied Journey Through Time

Taking on the iconic role of John Black in 1986, Hogestyn transformed into a character that became a staple of daytime television. This undercover agent, entangled in a web of mystery, captivated audiences with a dramatic narrative that echoed through generations. Originally the character of Roman Brady, John’s return after plastic surgery and amnesia marked a significant turning point in “Days of Our Lives,” intertwining his fate with that of beloved characters like Marlena Evans, portrayed by Deirdre Hall. Their on-screen marriage captured the hearts of many, solidifying their status as one of the show’s most cherished couples.

His brief departure from the show in 2009 did not diminish his impact. A heartfelt return in 2011 rekindled the passion of fans who had followed his journey loyally.

Reflections from Colleagues and Loved Ones

A wave of nostalgia and sorrow swept through the “Days of Our Lives” community with the announcement of his passing. Alison Sweeney, a former co-star who departed in 2022, expressed her grief on social media, stating, “[Drake] cared about every single scene, every single person.”

Christopher Sean, who played Hogestyn’s TV son, described him as a “true hero.” The sentiments were echoed by Martha Madison, who shared a touching memory that encapsulated Hogestyn’s essence. “He knew I was super nervous and after we finished our emotional scene, he hugged me and whispered, ‘Kid, it was like that moment when you hear the crack of the bat against a long ball that flies into the stands and the crowd goes wild.’” This moment illustrates how he nurtured not only the craft but also those around him.

Australian actor Dan Feuerriegel, one of the newer cast members who joined in 2021, reflected on how welcoming Hogestyn was, showcasing the actor’s generous spirit, which transcended the camera. The environment he cultivated on set was more than a workplace; it was a family.

Survived by his childhood sweetheart, Victoria, and their four children, as well as grandchildren, Hogestyn leaves behind a legacy that touches the hearts of many. The outpouring of tributes, memories shared, and the lasting impact he made on both screen and in the hearts of his family and fans serve as a poignant reminder of a life dedicated to love and storytelling.
