From East Lee County to Division 1: Lazaro Rogers’ Inspiring Rise in Football

The Inspiring Path of Lazaro Rogers: East Lee County’s Rising Star

East Lee County RB Lazaro Rogers is not just another name in the world of high school football; his journey to a Division 1 commitment is emblematic of perseverance, ambition, and unwavering support. This senior season has already become legendary, commencing with a momentous victory over long-time rival Lehigh—a win that not only crowned them champions of the “Beast of the East” trophy after twelve years but also set an exhilarating tone for what is to come. Following this, Rogers demonstrated his extraordinary talent with an astounding six-touchdown game against Gateway, positioning him as a pivotal player for his team.

Setting Ambitious Goals with Clarity

Rogers is clear about his aspirations. “I have a lot of goals,” he shares, reflecting a youth enriched with dreams. His determination to rush for 2,000 yards and score 25 touchdowns at Northern Illinois University reveals a maturity beyond his years. That commitment, made over summer, has already started to shape his play. “I told them these are my goals and I’m working to achieve them,” he adds, showcasing a blend of confidence and responsibility.

A Coach Who Believed

His commitment is not just personal triumph— it is a celebration of trust. Coach Thomas Hammock of NIU saw something special in Rogers, something that many others overlooked. “He took a chance,” Rogers acknowledges, the warmth evident in his voice. The respect he has for Hammock reflects a bond built not just on strategy, but on shared vision. “He showed me this can be your second home,” he recalls, embodying the sense of belonging and motivation that characterizes great teams. Northern Illinois, with its culture of success and bowl victories, became Rogers’ anticipated home.

From Humble Beginnings to Record Breaker

Rogers’ transformative journey ignited when he caught the eye of East Lee County head coach Herbans Paul. “I saw him walk in, trying to get equipment, and I knew he had potential,” Paul remembers. Yet, he believes in earning one’s place, proving that toughness often paves the road to greatness. Rogers recalled the harrowing workouts that followed his admission of wanting to play Division 1 football. “I threw up,” he admitted, laughter mingling with disbelief in his voice. Yet, amid those moments of struggle, everything within him began to change.

Reaching New Heights and Breaking Records

The desire for greatness became Rogers’ driving force. Coach Paul, with wisdom, noted that while many aspire for Division 1, few possess the grit to pursue it vehemently. “He’s one of the kids who really wanted it,” Paul asserted, recognizing Rogers’ unique fire. That passion culminated in breaking three school records: surpassing East Lee County’s most touchdowns, single-season rushing yards, and single-season touchdowns. Each record is a signpost marking his relentless journey.

The Journey Continues

As Rogers pushes forward, joy mingles with the anticipation of the WINK News Game of the Week against Estero. Every stride he takes is filled with the hopes of a community supporting its own. In a world accustomed to fleeting moments, Rogers represents the heart and tenacity that keep dreams alive. His story is not merely of athletic prowess; it’s a testament to what one can achieve against the odds.

Isn’t it fascinating to think that among athletes, only about 7% reach the college level? Rogers is not just part of that statistic; he is a torchbearer guiding others with his journey, proving that with effort and passion, extraordinary dreams can indeed unfold before your eyes.
