From the Mound to the Lens: FGCU Pitcher Discovers a New Passion for Photography

FGCU Pitcher Chase Kriebel’s Passion for Photography

FGCU pitcher Chase Kriebel finds solace in his dual passion for baseball and photography. On the field, he commands the pitcher’s mound—an arena where he feels empowered, every decision anchored in deliberate control. “I like that you know the game revolves around kind of me,” Kriebel said. “So I can take my time if I want to, tie my shoe if I want to. They got to wait on me until I’m ready to throw.” This desire for control mirrors his growing love for capturing moments through his camera lens.

In 2021, Kriebel faced an unexpected setback due to Tommy John surgery, temporarily sidelining his role as a pitcher during high school. “I kind of started it off wrong,” he reflected. Isolated and overwhelmed by the weight of uncertainty brought on by COVID-19, Kriebel found himself navigating a dark period. “I was alone a lot and in my thoughts. And it wasn’t good. I don’t recommend that for anybody.” Yet, out of this struggle emerged a passion that would illuminate his path: photography.

“I kind of just fell in love with capturing a moment because I realized that I was taking baseball for granted and that it might not always be there,” Kriebel explained, his voice tinged with nostalgia. His photography collection expanded rapidly, encompassing stunning landscapes, sleek automobiles, and dynamic baseball shots. Each photograph tells a story, a vivid reminder of the moments he cherishes.

“As a pitcher, I know what angles I want and what pictures I would like,” Kriebel shared. He has developed an intuitive understanding of photography, swiftly honing his ability to capture the essence of a moment. As the old saying goes, the best pictures tell stories, and for Kriebel, each shot is an intricate weave of artistry and emotion.

Reflecting on his journey, Kriebel confided in WINK News about the growth he’s experienced since first experimenting with his mother’s Canon camera. “I over-edited a lot,” he laughed. “I was over-editing. It doesn’t take much anymore.” This lighthearted moment reveals his humble attitude and ongoing evolution as a photographer.

Today, photography serves as more than just a hobby for him; it is a sanctuary. “It’s kind of an off-switch where I don’t have to worry if I had a bad outing or a bad day,” Kriebel noted. Indeed, the lens allows him to escape the pressures of competition and reconnect with the world around him. The art of photography offers a richly nuanced way to express his passion, expanding his narrative as both an athlete and an artist.

Interestingly, Kriebel’s hometown of Naples, Florida, is not only a pristine location for sports but also a vibrant canvas for photographers. With its stunning sunsets and lush landscapes, it continually inspires creativity and exploration. Indeed, as Kriebel finds balance between sports and art, he builds a legacy that multifaceted: a pitcher with an artistic soul.
