Vrbo, the vacation rental bookings-by-owner site, highlighted the “Phenomena List” trend as a theme for 2025.
With serene beaches and lush landscapes, Florida’s bioluminescent waters create a luminous spectacle that beckons visitors seeking unique experiences. The wonder of glowing waves, especially in Vero Beach, captures the souls of those yearning for a break from the daily grind. Here, during the summer, the waters reveal a magical glow, illuminating the night like a canvas painted with light.
According to Vrbo, these experiences cater to the quest for tranquility and escape, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in moments of awe. “These experiences are designed to offer peace and escape from the hustle of everyday life, with many travelers seeking prime spots for viewing these awe-inspiring natural wonders,” the spokesperson explained.
The Northern Lights stand tall among the 2025 travel aspirations, with 61% of respondents hoping to witness this celestial dance of colors, as revealed in Expedia’s survey data. “Droves of travelers booked private vacation homes along the path of totality to see the total solar eclipse in 2024, proving people will travel great distances to see natural phenomena in real life,” the Unpack ’25 press release shared.
Interestingly, 30% of travelers express a desire to witness geological marvels such as volcanoes, hot springs, and geysers. The urge to connect with nature’s grandeur seems like a heartfelt pursuit—an invitation to experience the Earth’s raw beauty up close.
With 80% of survey respondents emphasizing the importance of accommodations that provide prime viewing, the preference for private holiday rentals becomes clear. Travelers manifest an eagerness to find solace in places that offer more than just shelter; they seek residences that frame the night sky or spotlight nature’s illuminated wonders. 
“Americans are most interested in natural phenomena, like chasing the Northern Lights, witnessing synchronized fireflies in Tennessee, or seeing bioluminescent plankton in Florida,” said the spokesperson. Each experience offers a chance to disconnect and marvel at the extraordinary gifts of our planet. The glowing waters of Vero Beach are not merely a sight to behold; they represent a deeper longing for connection—to oneself, to nature, and to the universe.
During the summer, the shimmering waters of Florida ignite with life, thanks to the plankton, which illuminate the shoreline like stars fallen into the sea. Moreover, the synchronous fireflies’ twinkling display in the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee is another astounding occurrence worth seeking. “These synchronous fireflies create a rare spectacle where thousands of fireflies light up in unison,” notes Vrbo. This extraordinary event, happening in May and June, attracts visitors wanting to witness nature’s breathtaking choreography.
