From Court Dreams to Coaching: The Journey of Sheahen Dowling

Former FGCU walk-on player now an assistant coach Sheahen Dowling illustrates the profound connection that exists between passion and profession. Over the years, Dowling has witnessed countless three-pointers soaring through the air at Alico Arena, each shot a reminder of her own aspirations and experiences.

A Life Shaped by Basketball

“I grew up watching FGCU women’s basketball because my grandma lives here,” Dowling shared, her eyes reflecting a childhood filled with joy and excitement. “So I’ve been coming to the games for as long as I can remember.” The arena buzzed with energy, and memories of sitting in the stands, alongside her father, flooded her mind. He pointed out the three-point line, igniting a fascination for the game that would shape her life.

With determination and the heart of a true competitor, Dowling fulfilled her childhood dream of playing for Florida Gulf Coast, stepping onto the same court she idolized as a little girl. As a walk-on player, she felt the thrill of nailing those threes herself, a moment she cherishes even now. Yet, as her playing career concluded, a new question emerged: what comes next?

The Shift from Player to Coach

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do after I graduated,” she admitted, a hint of nostalgia lacing her words. Thoughts of coaching had lingered in her mind since high school, where she envisioned herself guiding future players. After a season at Valparaiso as a graduate assistant, Dowling found her way back to FGCU, this time as the director of video operations.

The role was demanding, yet rewarding. “Video is part-time, but it felt like full-time,” she remarked. Hours spent breaking down game footage were not merely a task; they became a window into understanding the game on a deeper level. “In the film room after games, we’d spend three hours dissecting plays. It was intense, yet fun. You learn so much.”

Taking on New Responsibilities

This summer marked a significant milestone in Dowling’s career as head coach Karl Smesko elevated her to assistant coach. “She’s very reliable,” Smesko said, acknowledging Dowling’s excellent work ethic and ability to lift the spirits of those around her. “It’s nice to see her make that next step up.” The recognition wasn’t just a career highlight; it was a moment of validation for all the hard work that led her there.

The celebration of this new role came with bittersweet joy. Dowling recalled a dinner at her aunt and uncle’s house, where family cheers of “What’s up, Coach?” enveloped her in love and pride. “It felt surreal,” she said, a bright smile illuminating her face.

Reflecting on the Path Forward

As she gazes out at the court where she once played, Dowling recognizes how far she has come. “Little Sheahen would be proud of where I am today,” she reflected quietly, her voice tinged with emotion. By embracing the role of mentor, she hopes to encourage future generations of athletes to pursue their dreams just as she did. After all, each three-point shot made inside that arena tells a story, and now, she is part of a new chapter—one focused on building champions both on and off the court.

And, like the trailblazers before her, she is determined to leave a legacy worth celebrating.
