FSW Reports Shocking 325% Surge in Student Campus Pantry Demand

Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW) has experienced a staggering 325% increase in campus pantry usage, highlighting the urgent needs of its students. As Thanksgiving approaches, many students face harsh realities, with some unable to return home due to the aftermath of two hurricanes that ravaged the community this season.

Michael Mogilevskiy, a dedicated intern with the Care and Adaptive Services department, reflects on the campus atmosphere since the semester began. “From August to now, I’ve witnessed an undeniable surge in students coming in,” he notes. The increase isn’t just numbers; it represents lives impacted and futures uncertain. The struggle is tangible, echoing through the quiet hallways of FSW.

Currently, the care pantry has become a lifeline. Ashley Myatt-Chisum, the director of the program, shares that last year’s demands have dramatically escalated. “The hurricanes exacerbated an already growing need. We now serve more individuals than ever before,” she emphasizes. The situation is critical; some students have resorted to living out of their cars, making such services indispensable in their daily lives.

“With the rising cost of living, students shouldn’t be burdened with food insecurity. These offerings are vital for their well-being, allowing them to concentrate on their studies,” Myatt-Chisum adds, painting a picture of resilience amidst adversity.

This year, in an innovative effort to bolster support, the FSW Foundation has introduced a unique initiative—students can earn free basketball tickets with each donation. Matthew Karastamatis from the foundation views this move as mutually beneficial. “The pantry’s needs are ongoing, and we hope to make this a yearly tradition. Plus, it’s a fantastic opportunity to fill our beautiful arena with fans.” Local businesses, particularly those in the Fort Myers area, are encouraged to participate, creating a sense of unity and community spirit that echoes throughout the campus.

Mogilevskiy has seen firsthand the impact of the pantry on students’ lives. “A simple meal, even if it’s a brief respite, uplifts their spirits,” he observes. “Asking for help isn’t a weakness; it’s a powerful step towards recovery.” This sentiment resonates deeply—it’s a reminder that vulnerability can lead to strength. Students should understand they are not alone in their struggles, and support is available to them.

As the holiday season approaches, donations will be collected at the arena until halftime on Thursday, granting those who give the chance to see FSW’s impressive basketball teams in action. In the spirit of the season, this initiative fosters a sense of hope and community, reminding everyone that kindness can create ripples of change.

In a world where challenges abound, Florida SouthWestern State College exemplifies resilience and compassion. Each act of generosity, each donation, serves as a testament to the strength found in community support. Through these collective efforts, students can navigate the complexities of student life, ensuring that when they gather for the holidays, they do so with a little less worry on their plates.
