FSW’s Revered Volleyball Coach Takes Over FGCU Program
FSW’s revered volleyball coach is now taking over the FGCU program, a move that signifies not just a new chapter for Thais Baziquetto-Allen, but also a promising horizon for collegiate volleyball in Florida. Her journey began in 2019, when she established the Florida Southwestern volleyball program, cultivating it into a dominant force in junior college volleyball circles.
A Passion for Growth and Community
As she steps into her new role at FGCU, Baziquetto-Allen reflects on the rich potential that lies ahead. “It just has so much potential at FGCU to go in there and continue to grow the program,” she stated, radiating enthusiasm. Her affection for the local community shines through; the support she and her teams received at Florida Southwestern has fostered a deep connection that she eagerly anticipates replicating. “I love the community. I love the support,” she adds, drawing a parallel with her experience at Florida Southwestern where community backing played a pivotal role.
Pioneering Success with a New Vision
Stepping in for Matt Botsford, who had led FGCU for 11 years, increases the stakes for Baziquetto-Allen. During Botsford’s tenure, FGCU clinched the ASUN tournament title and made appearances in the NCAA Tournament for four consecutive years. However, Baziquetto-Allen, with her proven track record, aims to build upon this legacy. Her ambitious vision includes enhancing the recruiting strategy, leaning on her extensive international network to attract talent while also tapping into local pool of players.
Record-Breaking Achievements at FSW
While at FSW, Baziquetto-Allen achieved remarkable feats. Under her leadership, the Bucs amassed an impressive 145-25 record, marked by five consecutive appearances in the NJCAA National Tournaments. In 2024, they made history as the first NJCAA Division I program to secure three back-to-back national championships, an accomplishment that underscores her coaching prowess. She was also honored with the NJCAA National Coach of the Year award for three straight years, each accompanied by the recruitment and development of the National Player of the Year.
The Heart of Coaching: Building Connections
What sets Baziquetto-Allen apart is her authentic dedication to fostering deep connections with her student-athletes. She emphasizes her expectations not just in terms of athletic performance but also as individuals, stating, “That’s something that I’m really passionate about: a deep connection with my student athletes.” This holistic approach to coaching aims to create well-rounded individuals who excel both on and off the court.
The Next Steps Forward
Baziquetto-Allen recently connected with her new team over a Zoom meeting and is prepared to hit the ground running on campus at FGCU next week. Unfortunately, as she makes her move, Florida Southwestern will initiate the search for a new head coach, signaling the end of an era while simultaneously heralding a new dawn.
As she prepares to lead FGCU, one can’t help but feel the ripple effect of her transition. The community buzz surrounding her move is palpable, echoing the sentiment that while she leaves behind a legacy at FSW, she carries with her the hope of expanding FGCU’s storied volleyball tradition. After all, at its core, volleyball is not just a game; it’s about forging connections, celebrating achievements, and building futures.
