Review: Broadway adaptation ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ is a well-meaning musical misfire better left on stage

“Dear Evan Hansen” premiered on Broadway in 2016 and quickly became a hit among teens and 20-somethings.  A film version opened last week at movie theaters across the country.

The story involves a lonely teenager with social anxiety who lies about being friends with a classmate who committed suicide. In the process, he unintentionally becomes a social media sensation.

“I think it really hit a nerve with people,” Mann Hall’s general manager, Scott Saxon, said in 2020. “The subject matter is very modern. It speaks to the connected folks and social media.”

Mann Hall isn’t the only Southwest Florida venue showing the live musical. After Fort Myers, the tour moves south to Artis—Naples from Feb. 22-27. Tickets are already available for the Naples show and cost $99-$150.

“Dear Evan Hansen” racked up six Tony Awards in 2017, including Best Musical. It also won the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

The national tour was originally scheduled to visit Southwest Florida in March 2021, but it was postponed due to the pandemic. Mann Hall moved most of its canceled 2020-21 Broadway shows to the 2021-22 season, including “My Fair Lady,” “Rent” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

A limited number of “Dear Evan Hansen” tickets will be sold via lottery for all Fort Myers performances, according to a Mann Hall news release. Those will cost $24. More details weren’t offered about when the lottery starts or how the process will work.
