Glen Powell candidly stated that his mother “would never let” him take over Tom Cruise’s storied role in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise.
During a lively episode of “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday, ESPN analyst McAfee connected via FaceTime with the 36-year-old actor, probing him about speculations suggesting that Cruise envisioned him stepping into the role at the forefront of the action-packed series.
“We just want to call and say congratulations, brother,” McAfee joyously exclaimed to Powell.
“My mom would never let me do that,” Powell humorously interjected, a touch of sincerity underscoring his words.
“That’s the worst gig in town; everybody knows that,” Powell laughed, shaking his head. “That’s a death trap!”
In a moment lightened by laughter, he prompted the host to exclaim, “He’s lying!”
Glenn Powell’s relationship with his family is notably strong. His parents, Cyndy Powell and Glen Powell Sr., have made delightful appearances in all of their son’s films, showcasing the tight-knit bond they share.
Meanwhile, Tom Cruise, at 62 years old, continues to astonish audiences by performing his own stunts in the adrenaline-fueled franchise. Director Christopher McQuarrie has remarked on Cruise’s remarkable fearlessness, suggesting he has “no limits” when tackling perilous stunts.
These jaw-dropping stunts range from precariously hanging on the exterior of an airplane during takeoff to free-falling from dizzying heights and climbing the tallest skyscraper in the world. Cruise’s daredevil behavior crafts an exhilarating experience for audiences and solidifies the franchise’s legendary status.
As it stands, “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning,” the franchise’s eighth installment, is scheduled for release on May 23, 2025. Despite the anticipation about future installments, there has been no indication from Cruise that he plans to retire from the role of IMF spy Ethan Hunt anytime soon.
In a revealing July 2023 interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Cruise expressed admiration for fellow actor Harrison Ford, who famously reprised his Indiana Jones role into his 80s. “Harrison Ford is a legend,” Cruise said. “I hope to still be going strong in another twenty years and continue making Mission: Impossible films until I reach his age.”
Powell and Cruise forged a meaningful relationship during their collaboration on the 2022 blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick.” In discussions thereafter, Powell noted that Cruise effectively became a mentor during this experience. Their bond shone brightly as Cruise attended the premiere of Powell’s action-packed thriller “Twisters” in July 2023.
On social media, Cruise shared a celebratory moment, posting an Instagram photo with Powell on the red carpet, captioned, “Fun night with friends, watching a movie!!” Such moments of joy are reminders that even giants in the industry cherish camaraderie and connection.
