Empowering Nontraditional Students: New Grant Opportunities at FGCU!

FGCU’s Good Job Challenge Grant provides a beacon of hope for nontraditional students, making dreams of higher education accessible.

Laura Crawford, a determined Southwest Florida native, recently traded her cap and gown for a ruler and chalkboard, stepping into a future filled with promise. After graduating from Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) last weekend, she is poised to begin her teaching career next school year, fueled by the support of the Good Job Challenge Grant.

Returning to school as an adult often feels out of reach for many, yet Laura’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder that persistence can lead to remarkable achievements. Balancing the responsibilities of a full-time job, a husband, and two children, she courageously decided to finish her bachelor’s degree and acquire the teaching credentials she needed.

“It was just an incredible experience,” Laura reflected. “Eighteen months of continuous semesters, even in the summer, and here I am, a graduate!” Her persistence paid off, culminating in an uplifting graduation day that marked the beginning of a new chapter.

Having dedicated seven years as an instructional aide at Diplomat Elementary School, she faced a barrier that many educators encounter: the need for a bachelor’s degree to progress. This challenge motivated her to take action.

Lucky enough to benefit from FGCU’s Good Job Challenge Grant, Laura was among those fortunate students encouraged to pursue advancement through education. This initiative is crafted to assist underemployed individuals and those in paraprofessional roles, exactly like Laura was, by alleviating financial burdens tied to their degree programs.

“When this opportunity came along, I realized it was time to act,” Laura said, her excitement palpable. “I had to seize the moment.” With this grant, her coursework was entirely online, which seamlessly fit into her busy life as a wife and mother.

The support of family became her backbone during this demanding phase. “I couldn’t have done it without my family,” she admitted, her eyes reflecting gratitude. With her older son in his senior year of high school and her younger child in seventh grade, both boys cheered her on as she navigated this milestone.

“My husband took the lead in the kitchen, ensuring our dinners were ready on Sunday nights while I tackled assignments. They really believed in me,” she shared, a smile lighting up her face.

The Good Job Challenge Grant opens doors beyond education. Individuals pursuing careers in healthcare, manufacturing, and various other sectors can also find support within this initiative. It reflects a broader commitment to fostering an environment conducive to career advancement for all.

Looking ahead, Laura feels a mix of anticipation and nostalgia. “Eighteen months went by in a flash. I still have papers on my mind,” she laughed, pondering the new adventures that await in her teaching journey.

Laura Crawford’s story is a reminder that dreams are not confined by age or circumstance. With determination and the right support, the classroom can indeed become a new beginning for anyone willing to grasp the opportunity.
