Jaclyn backhaus’s Men on Boats piece is one-of-a kind and hilarious!

This hilarious off-Broadway comedy is not to be missed from October 21st through 31st.

Men on Boats is a Comedy by Jaclyn backhaus, directed by Rachael Enrizzi

October 21st – 31st • This boisterous comedy is history like you’ve never seen it before – without a single man in sight! Men On Boats tells (mostly) the tale of an 1869 expedition led by a single-armed captain and a group of loyal, but crazy volunteers. They set out to chart the Colorado River’s course. Along the journey, this unusual team encounters many difficulties and conflicts. The cast is entirely female, in keeping with Backhaus’ famous play.

The Roommate, a comedy written by Jen Silverman directed by Stephen Hooper

December 9-19 • Sharon, 50, recently divorced and needs a roommate to share her home in Iowa. Robyn is also in her mid-50s and needs somewhere to hide from the world, as well as a chance for a fresh start. Sharon discovers the secrets of Robyn and is motivated to change her entire life. This dark comedy is about how to redirect your life and what happens when you lose control.

The Colored museum by George C. Wolfe, directed by Sonya McCarthy

January 8-30 • The Colored Museum electrified, worried and excited audiences of all stripes and redefined the way we see black in America today. These eleven “exhibitions”, which are all about black history, challenge stereotypes of black people and help to define black reality.

It is an immersive theater experience that allows the audience to travel around the Alliance campus and gallery in order to view each “exhibit”. The theater is the only place that will not be used during the production, ironically.

February 17-27 • A “soft-hearted comedy full of dark reflexes” (The New York Times) by the author of Moonstruck and Doubt. Tony Reilly, a father from Killucan in Ireland plans to disinherit Anthony and sell his family farm. Rosemary is the neighbor, and her bitterness has lasted a long time. He finds a piece of his land in his way. It doesn’t matter if you embrace it, or fight it, fate is all that matters in this Irish tale, told with lots of language, compassion, and some surprises.

The Cake a Comedy by Stephanie Davis and Bekah Brunstetter

March 17-27 • Everything is going well for Della. She is a renowned North Carolina baker and has been selected to compete in her beloved TV baking competition. Her best friend from New York City returns home and asks her daughter to make a wedding cake. Della is shocked to learn that Jen plans to marry a woman. She is then forced to question her deeply held beliefs. This piece, written and produced by Bekah Bunstetter of NBC’s “This Is Us”, is both funny and emotional.
