CAPE CORAL, Fla. – A new park will break ground in Cape Coral on Tuesday.

The Joe Coviello Environmental Park ceremony begins at 10 a.m. next to Oasis High School. The park will be dedicated to the city’s late mayor who died suddenly in January.

Members of Friends of Cape Coral Wildlife say Coviello was fond of eagles. An eagle’s nest rests in the trees of the soon-to-be park.

Members say preserving the nest and building a park where people can enjoy nature is the perfect tribute to him.

The project is part of the city’s $60 million dollar expansion of its parks and recreation amenities. The park is expected to cost $2.1 million dollars to complete.

The city says it will include a walking path, picnic shelter, boardwalk, pier, and outdoor classrooms.

In a statement to NBC2 the city said:

“Naming the park after former Mayor, Joe Coviello, is a testament to the support and respect he received from the residents, business leaders, community leaders, and other politicians who all pushed to name this park after him to honor his memory.“
