Heartfelt Outpouring: Fort Myers Coach and New Orleans Teen Share Their Inspiring Journey

New Orleans attack survivor from Fort Myers and her former coach reflect on resilience and hope.

In the wake of a tragic incident that left two teenagers from Fort Myers injured during what has been labeled a terrorist attack in New Orleans, their former coach, Paolo Acosta, offers a glimpse into their current recovery journey. Acosta once nurtured the talents of Elle Eisele and Steele Idelson when both girls played soccer at the Canterbury School.

After the attack, Acosta took it upon herself to enlighten the community on the strength and spirit of these young athletes.

One of the two Fort Myers girls who were in the New Orleans attack speaks out

Coach Acosta shared, “Elle has been following the news, and she’s grateful for the stories circulating about her and Steele.” The power of community support shines through, especially as Elle took to Instagram for the first time since the incident, expressing her gratitude: “I am alive, and I am thankful that God spared Steele and myself. I see your messages and appreciate your love; soon, I will respond.”

During the heart-wrenching event, the girls were among over 30 individuals injured when a truck plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street—a busy hub of culture and celebration. Tragically, this event claimed the lives of fourteen innocent people. The shocking nature of the attack left Acosta in disbelief as she learned about Elle and Steele’s involvement.

“You never contemplate that someone you know is right in the middle of it,” Acosta noted. “When I found out later in the day, disbelief washed over me.”

Both Elle and Steele have faced challenges before in their journey as athletes, proving their tenacity time and time again. Coach Acosta recounted past struggles: “These girls have battled through torn ACLs; one even endured a concussion. Their determination shines through their support for each other and their team during those tough times.”

Recent updates indicate a turning point in their recovery. Acosta shared, “Originally, things looked bleak, but thankfully, they are now in stable condition. I’ve received encouraging news from Elissa, Elle’s mother.” A bond of love and support connects them—one that transcends the soccer field.

Acosta reminisced about their time on the pitch, “Elle was the life of the party; she radiated joy. Steele, on the other hand, embodied calmness and steady friendship.” The two young women were pioneers in their middle school soccer team, paving the way for future generations. “Without their spirit and leadership, opportunities for others may not have been the same,” he reflected thoughtfully.

The community’s solidarity is palpable and moving. At the Canterbury School, a heartfelt display of balloons and a banner reading “Praying for Elle & Steele” appeared at the entrance of the soccer field, created by an unknown supporter. Acosta remarked, “I inquired whether someone from the team did it, but it seems to be a selfless act. It’s a timely reminder of the love and care surrounding them.”

Despite the trauma, Acosta’s hope remains unwavering. “We love them, we’re rooting for them, and I can’t wait to see them back on the field again,” he expressed, imbued with optimism. The resilience of these young athletes is a testament to their character and the unwavering support of a community that stands together through thick and thin.
