NORTH PORT, Fla. — North Port residents celebrate the commission’s latest decision regarding Warm Mineral Springs Park, a poignant moment that left many community members in tears of joy.
“I’m wearing my glasses because my eyes are so puffed up from crying all these years of pent-up anxiety fighting the commission to please, please recognize the value of [Warm Mineral Springs Park] and save it,” conveyed resident Robin San Vicente, her voice heavy with emotion. “When they voted for the conservation easement, it felt as if all my worries had flooded away.”
The commissioners took a significant step forward by agreeing to establish a conservation easement on the 60 acres neighboring the park, a decision seen as a beacon of hope for environmental preservation.

North Port Commissioners address future of Warm Mineral Springs Park
City leaders declared that the city manager will collaborate with the staff to engage in negotiations with the Conservation Foundation and the Gulf Coast Community Foundation concerning the easement. This is a monumental milestone for advocates like San Vicente, who have passionately fought for this outcome for years.
“I’m still celebrating, and I probably will be for a long time,” she remarked, a smile breaking through her tears.
This easement is more than just a legal measure; it will safeguard the natural beauty and tranquility of the land, preventing it from succumbing to high-density development.
Previously, city officials weighed options of selling the land or allowing development to proceed. Yet, the voices of North Port’s residents resonated, shifting perspectives. Commissioner Phil Stokes acknowledged their influence, stating, “A tremendous amount of credit goes to the citizens who have tirelessly advocated for preserving the springs and maintaining low-intensity development on those acres.”
In a spirit of preservation, commissioners also voted to restore the historic structures on the property. “One will be the spa building,” announced Stokes. “We envision transforming it into an open-air space. The other structure will be tidied up, with plans to renovate the administrative building for office use and facilities.”
They agreed to safeguard the cyclorama until such time that sufficient funding arises for its restoration, ensuring that this piece of history remains intact.
The Cyclorama at Warm Mineral Springs Park is one of the historical buildings that will not meet the wrecking ball’s fate. This commitment to preservation reflects a broader understanding of why such spaces matter.
Yet, amidst the celebration, San Vicente emphasized the importance of forward-thinking. “Enough looking back; let’s look forward to the future of Warm Mineral Springs and its ongoing preservation.”
