Is it fun to stay at the YMCA? For the residents of Lehigh Acres, this question may soon transform from mere speculation to a delightful reality. Veterans Park and Williams Park offer splendid outdoor escapes, but when Florida’s infamous rain clouds roll in, options dwindle. Locals dream of a thriving hub where both young and old can gather, learn, and play—a dream that Gwyn Gittens and Butch Swank are determined to turn into a vibrant reality.
Gwyn Gittens envisions a community filled with resources. “Gyms, fields for sports, after-school activities, reading circles, and mentorship programs—all are essential to our community’s growth. We are at a point where we need these opportunities,” she reflects thoughtfully. Serving on the Southwest Florida YMCA executive board, Gittens champions the cause for building a facility tailored to the needs of Lehigh Acres. She believes that such a space will not only enrich the lives of existing residents but also create jobs that will empower the local economy.
“It’s vital to focus on the hardworking people already here, rather than just those on the way,” Gittens emphasizes, hinting at the importance of community loyalty. She understands that the heart of Lehigh Acres beats within its people and their needs.
In a bid to amplify community voices, Gittens reached out to her longtime friend, Butch Swank, for assistance. Together, they’ve launched a survey to gauge interest in the YMCA project. “They’re literally asking us what we want and need, so let’s not miss our chance to respond,” Swank urges with a hint of urgency, recognizing the importance of community engagement.
Those who wish to contribute can find the survey easily and take a few moments to provide input on what amenities they would like to see in their potential community center. Swank notes, “We have no dedicated space for gatherings—be it senior clubs or simply friends wanting to chat. The YMCA could provide the perfect solution.”
While the survey doesn’t have a close date yet, more responses could pave the way for this cherished establishment. The ideal site? Central Lehigh—a locale that would maximize accessibility for families and individuals alike. As of October 21, Gittens shared that 276 voices had already chimed in.
The charm of a local YMCA extends beyond just sports. Many memories can be forged in its halls: youth teams celebrating victories; senior citizens enjoying book clubs; families gathering for community events. Just shy of 100 years old, the YMCA has been a beacon for many—offering a sense of belonging when life feels chaotic. Little did the residents of Lehigh know how much they might soon emulate those visions of camaraderie that blossom in YMCA spaces everywhere.
Humorously, one might just wonder if the YMCA mascot could even stir up interest with jokes about fitness or health! After all, laughter, as much as exercise, fosters community spirit. As these courageous locals take steps toward their goal, they remind us that when we dream together, wonderful spaces can emerge from a simple idea, one survey response at a time.
