LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Lee Health gives us a look at their robots in the OR, showcasing a glimpse into the future of medicine at the Gulf Coast Medical Center. FOX 4’s Bella Line had the unique opportunity to witness how these extraordinary machines enhance surgical procedures, painting a picture of a medical landscape transformed by technology.
“I don’t say this lightly; it has revolutionized surgery,” remarked Gilbert Abou Lahoud, Robotic General Surgeon, with a hint of enthusiasm that underscores the significance of this advancement.
With 29 robotic systems in operation and an impressive track record of over 14,000 surgeries since 2015, Lee Health is setting benchmarks in the medical field. A milestone recently achieved was the completion of one of Florida’s first outpatient hysterectomies performed by a robot, marking a historic moment for the institution.
According to Dr. Abou Lahoud, the advent of robotic surgery is not just an upgrade; it fundamentally reshapes patient care. Fewer complications, expedited recovery, and minimal scarring create a symphony of benefits that resonate strongly with patients and their families.

“It has revolutionized surgery,” Lee Health making medical strides with robots in the OR
“My patients definitely feel the difference in their recovery. Some people don’t even take pain medications for certain procedures,” Dr. Lahoud shared, his eyes revealing the satisfaction of a surgeon who has witnessed transformations beyond scalpel and stitch.
Dr. Juan Ibarra, the Robotic Surgery Program Manager, elaborated on the vast applications of this technology. They perform diverse operations, ranging from complex brain surgeries to hip replacements, catering to patients across all age groups, including the tiniest of infants.
“This technology allows us to provide our patients with cutting-edge care, improving outcomes and recovery times,” Dr. Ibarra said, illuminating the reality that innovation is woven into the very fabric of modern healthcare.
Importantly, they emphasized that automation is not a threat to positions within the surgical team; instead, it complements their efforts. Patients benefit from these robotic enhancements at no additional cost, ensuring accessible healthcare remains a priority.
“Before the expansion of our program, many patients felt compelled to travel to Tampa or Miami for specialized surgeries like Hiatal Hernia or Paraesophageal Hernia,” Dr. Lahoud explained. “Now, these options are available right here in their own backyard, allowing families to stay close during the healing process.” This brings to light not just a medical triumph, but a community-focused approach that resonates deeply in a world often scattered by distance.
Dr. Lahoud proudly stated that all abdominal surgeries at Lee Health are now performed robotically. The choice among surgeons is resonant—”You can ask any robotic surgeon; they would never go back to minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, because it is that much better,” he asserted, capturing the essence of this medical evolution.
As technology progresses, Lee Health stands at the forefront, merging human skill with robotic precision, a partnership that elevates the standard of care. It reminds us all that the future of medicine isn’t just about machines, but about how they improve patient lives, making even the most significant surgeries feel less imposing and more like a gentle hand guiding one toward recovery.
