Cape Coral Charity Launches Housing Initiative to Support Local Homeless Veterans

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A Cape Coral charity is making strides towards addressing the urgent issue of homelessness among local veterans with an ambitious housing project. Juan Cordero, a Vietnam Veteran and dedicated Chaplain, has transformed the five-acre land he purchased off Pine Island Road over four decades ago from a chaotic mess into a hopeful sanctuary.

“It was a mess,” recalls Cordero, the grit in his voice betraying years of hard work. “I got it cleaned up. I put up a fence. I bought 16 goats. It became a farm.” Yet, his vision has shifted; he now seeks to cultivate something far more meaningful than agriculture. Instead of nurturing livestock, he aims to nurture the lives of his fellow veterans.

Cape Coral Charity plans housing project for homeless vets

Driven by a profound sense of duty, Cordero stated, “When I heard about how many homeless veterans we have in Lee County, I wanted to house them.” The situation has grown dire; homelessness in Southwest Florida has surged by nearly 70% since Hurricane Ian devastated the region. One out of every five men experiencing homelessness nationwide are veterans, as reported by the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans.

In response to this growing crisis, Cordero established Holy Family Village, a Christian-based charity focusing on eradicating veteran homelessness. His commitment reflects a deep compassion for those who have served. “How much more time I got? Only God knows. I opened my heart and mind to get this village established because I know I will help lots of people,” he shared.

The organization is actively fundraising and working diligently on the housing project, with Cordero generously planning to donate his five-acre plot for development. His vision resonates deeply with those involved, like board member David Don Hobley. Having faced homelessness himself shortly after Hurricane Ian, Hobley understands the complex web of challenges that often ensnare veterans. “We’re trained to be tough from the time we enter the military until we leave. A lot of veterans have trouble asking for help when they need it,” he noted, encapsulating a sentiment shared by many.

J. Eric Booker, another board member who has battled homelessness, finds strength and purpose through his work at the charity. “It’s actually helped me deal with my own PTSD and helps me take away from the pain,” he reflects. Through shared experiences and collective resilience, this group of veterans stands united, each holding onto hope that their work will change lives.

As the community rallies around Holy Family Village, local businesses are also getting involved, offering support that reinforces the bond between service and community. Every donation, whether from a large corporation like Lee Health or a small family-run shop, contributes to the dream of a stable home for those who have served. It’s a testament to the collective spirit of compassion that defines Cape Coral.

Interestingly, in the backdrop of this profound endeavor, it is worth noting that Lee County is known for its rich coral reefs and vibrant marine life, reminding us that, just as nature can rebound, so too can lives with the right support and care. As Cordero and his team forge ahead, they embody resilience—an everyday miracle that offers not just shelter, but comfort and dignity.
