“LANE CLOSURES” near Sanibel off of McGregor Blvd.

The affected stretch runs from Shell Point Blvd to Port Comfort Road. Crews from the Florida Department of Transportation will work on the north and south sides of the causeway in staggered phases over the next three months, with completion expected in six months.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, this construction is a necessary step towards recovery and revitalization. The scars left by the storm are visible yet healing, showcasing the resilience of this beautiful locale.

The closure is likely to create a bit of a bottleneck. Those familiar with the route anticipate a challenge. Robert Manzo, a long-time visitor to the island, shares his thoughts, “It’s definitely going to make it a little more congested going over the bridge.”

Yet, this tropical paradise beckons with promises of adventure and serenity. Billy Kirkland, who has been the heart behind Billy’s Bike Rentals for nearly 25 years, encourages patience amidst the delays. “Traffic can be a little hectic,” he reminds us. But the path leads to joy and relaxation. “You’re coming into a tropical paradise, so relax, enjoy the trip. If we didn’t have construction, you wouldn’t be coming here at all.” His optimism shines like the bright sun overhead.

As a way of fostering community spirit, Kirkland invites everyone to celebrate the anniversary of his rental business this Sunday, August 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free hotdogs and burgers will be served, a gesture of thanks for those navigating the challenges of this lane closure.

Officials from FDOT, along with Sanibel authorities, emphasize the importance of adhering to speed limit signs during this period. Staying mindful on the roads reflects a collective effort to rebuild and recover.
