Macy’s to close 100 stores next year

Macy's reported second quarter earnings Thursday.

The fate of the two Macy’s in Southwest Florida — at Coastland Center in Naples and Edison Mall in Fort Myers — remains uncertain.

A corporate spokeswoman on Thursday morning said Macy’s isn’t stating publicly yet which stores are closing.

Macy’s employs 14,300 workers in Florida at 60 Macy’s stores, five Bloomingdale’s, three Bloomingdale’s Outlets (one at Miromar) and one Bluemercury, according to the retailer’s website.

Asked whether Macy’s in Naples might close, a store associate there said, “We do not know which ones at this point.”

A store associate at Macy’s in Fort Myers said, “We are not” when asked whether her store was on the closing list.

A general manager for the Bloomingdale’s Outlet store at Miromar in Estero could not immediately be reached for comment about whether his stored would be affected by the closures.
