The buzz surrounding the googly eyes prank in Bend, Oregon, has come to light, with the identity of its playful orchestrator revealed.
Residents began to notice the novel addition of googly eyes adorning various sculptures scattered across the city.
Late last year, officials from the City of Bend took to social media, urging those responsible for the prank to cease their antics.
“We treasure our roundabout art in Bend, and it’s important to care for it. While the googly eyes on the art pieces around town might bring a smile, removing them properly comes at a cost to keep the art intact,” the city’s post stated.
Keith, the founder of a local non-profit named Guardian Group, dedicated to combatting human trafficking, came forward as the prankster.
“For me, it’s all about bringing joy… The sight of families erupting with laughter as they spot these googly-eyed sculptures turns an ordinary day into a delightful experience,” Keith shared with the AP.
He reflects, “This is my way of coping with serious issues in life. Humor is a powerful tool.”
Community members joined the conversation on Facebook, expressing their thoughts and light-hearted banter about the prank.
“Is this really Bend’s biggest concern?” questioned one local, while another remarked, “A little adhesive won’t hurt metal.”
“I’m all for the googly eyes!” joked a user, and another commented, “It’s great to see Bend taking a pro-googly eye stance.”
“Let’s focus on fixing potholes instead,” another voice chimed in, highlighting local issues amidst the laughter.
The prank has embroiled eight sculptures in its mischief, with the cost to remove the googly eyes projected at $1,500, according to the AP.
Keith generously offered to cover any expenses incurred from his playful act, demonstrating a commitment to the community he serves.
