Turn Your Past into Promise: Job Opportunities for Those with Criminal Records

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Aiming to help people with criminal records find jobs, Fort Myers photographer Alma Bruffy creates opportunities through her initiative. She transforms perspectives and lives with her unique flair for photography.

With the weight of her words, she speaks candidly about the justice system: “Unfortunately, the justice system is a revolving door.” Bruffy, who founded SWFL Headshots, sees the struggles firsthand. Individuals unable to secure employment often face grim realities; they can’t provide for their families and may re-enter the system that ensnared them. This understanding fueled her passion to establish the uplifting event, Mugshots to Headshots, where those with criminal backgrounds receive free professional headshots to aid in their job searches.

Iain Ocasio embodies the sentiment shared by many. “It feels like when I apply for a position, I get put on trial all over again,” reflected Ocasio, who made the journey from Port Charlotte to participate. “Even though it’s been 40 years.” His story represents countless others longing for a second chance, highlighting their shared struggle.

Partnering with the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, Bruffy and her business partner Bob Ahrens orchestrated the free clinic at the Alliance for the Arts, a local hub of creativity and support. Makeup artists worked their magic, transforming not just appearances but attitudes. Participants also gained access to resume-building resources and even a selection of business attire to take home.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever had makeup done and I feel amazing,” exclaimed Fort Myers resident Hiedi White, her joy palpable. “I feel like Cinderella. For me, it’s to go from dope to hope.” Her laughter resonated, a testament to the profound change she felt in that moment.

Thanks to a generous $8,500 grant from the City of Fort Myers, Bruffy was able to provide quality clothing, either donated or purchased for the event. “We want them to feel amazing from head to toe,” she said passionately. “We want them to look beautiful. We want them to be dressed for the part.”

However, the event’s impact goes well beyond aiding job seekers in finding employment. It transforms how individuals perceive themselves. Ocasio was taken aback when he first saw his headshot. “It did take me by surprise,” he admitted. “Because I saw myself looking really good.”

White echoed his sentiments, her smile lighting up the room. “I can’t believe that that’s who I am,” she said, radiance in her voice. “That’s me, that’s Hiedi!” In these simple moments, hope burgeons, and the past dissolves, allowing for growth and renewal.

As Bruffy and Ahrens cast their vision forward, they aspire to hold more events, dreaming ambitiously of reaching beyond Lee County to touch lives statewide. With a heart full of compassion and a camera ready to capture the light, they continue to inspire a community to rise together, finding strength in shared stories and new beginnings.
