New gym offers a safe place to play for kids on the autism spectrum: We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym in Naples is becoming a cherished haven. This vibrant facility invites children like Arlo and Ezra Mahigel, creating a welcoming space for all.
“If they didn’t close, we’d never leave,” reflects Michael Mahigel, their father, capturing the essence of joy this place brings. Arlo, who is neurodivergent, experiences the world uniquely compared to his neurotypical brother, Ezra. Together, they thrive in an environment tailored to their varying needs.
We Rock the Spectrum values inclusivity, welcoming kids of all abilities. It offers engaging activities that provide enriching experiences. “It’s a sanctuary where they can play among peers, sharing laughter and lessons, especially when school and care options fade,” Michael shares, highlighting its importance to families.
More than Just a Gym: A Community Hub
This gym serves as a delightful one-stop shop for families, fostering connections and support. Ed Paquette and Lisa Kolak, the founders, opened this space in December, driven by a profound personal mission.
“My son and granddaughter are on the spectrum. I wanted to create a community where everyone, regardless of ability, plays and learns together,” Kolak says, expressing her desire to bridge gaps in understanding and acceptance. This heartfelt initiative manifests in a place where barriers dissolve amidst swinging, ziplining, and jumping.
Thriving Together: The Impact on Families
For parents like Gerald Matos, the gym represents more than entertainment; it signals peace of mind. “After a long day at school, he can unload his worries and truly enjoy himself here,” he remarks, sharing the relief he finds in this supportive atmosphere.
Such sentiments resonate deeply. Many parents often struggle to find suitable places for their differently abled children. “There aren’t many options for kids like Josiah, so it was challenging for us,” Gerald explains, emphasizing the blessing this facility has become. The realization that their children are in a safe, accepting environment is a relief that cannot be overstated, transforming their approach to recreational time.
With laughter ringing through the air, and diverse interactions blossoming, It’s clear that We Rock the Spectrum is not just a gym. It’s a refuge of acceptance, a nurturing ground for friendships, and a wellspring of joy for all children. Each visit invites moments that shape memories, fostering growth in unexpected, delightful ways.
