Local Veterans Ride the Waves: Cape Labor Day Kayak Tournament Takes Center Stage!

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — The Cape Labor Day Kayak Tournament makes waves for local veterans, transcending the typical holiday festivities. This inspiring event, held on the serene waters of the Caloosahatchee, showcases a commitment that goes far beyond competition.

As the sun dipped below the horizon on a warm Monday morning, teams launched from Monarca’s restaurant, ready to tackle a seven-mile course. They weren’t just paddling for glory but rather to honor the sacrifices made by the local veteran community. Chris Cicotello, a Marine veteran and the proud owner of First Round Draft, envisioned this race as a heartfelt tribute. “Veterans are the backbone of our community,” he emphasized, poignantly recognizing their contributions.

PADDLES UP: Cape Labor Day kayak tournament makes waves for local veterans

The excitement surged as paddles splashed and laughter filled the air. Brianna Swartz and Frank Mann, the tournament’s champions, echoed Chris’s sentiment, noting, “Where would our country be without them?” Exhausted yet energized, they looked forward to scrumptious food, live music, and the thrill of a raffle that awaited them.

“We’ve got prizes for everyone,” Cicotello shared enthusiastically. From an inflatable paddle board to a slushy machine, hats, gifts, and souvenirs were offered, with proceeds benefiting the Marine Corps League’s Toys for Tots program. It’s moments like these that exemplify the spirit of community involvement and charitable support.

Cicotello remains determined to make this kayak tournament an enduring tradition, already sparking conversations about next year’s event. “I would really like to see the Army, Navy, Marines, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and maybe some firefighters compete for an in-house commanders cup,” he envisioned, hinting at a lively rivalry that could further unite the local heroes.

The camaraderie was palpable. Swartz and Mann, having claimed their title, laughed good-naturedly at the prospect of defending it next year. “No pressure, right?” they joked as they revelled in their victory.

Ultimately, the Cape Coral Labor Day Kayak Tournament is about more than competition. It’s about connection—between veterans and the community, between tradition and progress. This joyful gathering resonates deeply, ensuring that the sacrifices of the past are honored today.
