Timing Your Travel: When to Score Cheaper Flights and Hotels for Trump’s Inauguration

Trump’s Inauguration: When Will D.C. Travel Prices Drop?

As the dust settles after Inauguration Day, the travel landscape in Washington, D.C., is poised for a shift. Tourists keen on visiting the nation’s capital soon will find that the costs of flights and hotel stays are set to decrease significantly.

Record Highs Amidst Historical Moments

The swearing-in of President Donald Trump has drawn an influx of visitors from all corners of the U.S., eager to witness this remarkable event. Their dedication came at a price, as transportation and lodging costs surged during this historic occasion.

Flight searches to Washington, D.C., skyrocketed by nearly 50% leading up to Inauguration Day, according to Google Flights data. This increased interest prompted a flurry of activity in travel planning, reflecting the nation’s keen desire to engage with its political milestones.

Hotel Prices Soar

During the inauguration week, hotel prices climbed steeply, with rates seen on platforms like Hotels.com and Booking.com often reaching between $1,000 and $3,000 per night. For travelers still hoping to experience D.C., there’s a silver lining—rates are projected to tumble by 50% to 85% in many establishments post-January 20.

On average, hotel rooms during the inauguration weekend commanded around $700, significantly higher than the $300 average found during typical weekends in D.C.

Price Shock on Last-Minute Flights

Recent data revealed staggering prices for last-minute flights; a round-trip journey from Fort Lauderdale stood at $1,888, while trips from Dallas were fetching $760. Such spikes illustrate how the demand for travel converges with political events.

However, a mere week later, the same flight from Dallas to Washington could cost just $180, a staggering 420% decrease. Likewise, Fort Lauderdale’s ticket prices will fall to about $323—an impressive 584% in contrast to inauguration week.

Forecasts predict a downward trend for airfares commencing Thursday, January 23, with Fridays being particularly budget-friendly for traveling into the capital. Similarly, hotel prices are expected to revert to average levels by Friday.

D.C. travel

“As the festivities gently fade and dignitaries make their way home, travelers will notice a return to normal pricing,” observed an expert in travel trends. However, fluctuations based on origin cities remain, necessitating a bit of patience for some.

As the inauguration stage is dismantled, the echoes of history mingle with the city’s charming architecture. While remnants of the event may be scarce, fascinating sites like the Capitol Building remain accessible, allowing visitors to engage with American history in person. Making a reservation for a tour is highly encouraged, enhancing the visit with tangible connections to the nation’s past.
