The Progressive Club of the Islands will hold its virtual monthly meeting on February 18th at 4pm

The guest speaker is US Representative Van Demings, D-Orlando, who serves the 10th Congressional District. She will talk about the current challenges in Florida and America and the necessary actions that need to be taken.

Demings was born in Jacksonville, worked as a social worker, and then joined the Orlando Police Department. During her 27-year career she has held many roles including Commander of the Airport Division on September 11th, Commander of Special Operations, Member of the Crisis Negotiation Team, Commander of the Critical Incident Stress Management Team and Executive Vice President of the International Airport Association – and seaport police.

In 2007 Demings was selected to head the Orlando Police Department – the first woman to hold the position. Her tenure was marked by a 40 percent reduction in violent crime, including robbery and murder. Demings also served as co-chair of the Florida Gang Intervention Regional Task Force and a member of the Florida Police Chiefs’ legislative team. She founded Operation Positive Direction, a mentoring program designed to strengthen relationships between local law enforcement agencies and youth.

Demings was elected to Congress in 2016. Its duties include: Internal Security Committee; Standing Committee on Intelligence Services of the House of Representatives (subcommittee on Defense News and War Fighters Support and Intelligence Modernization and Readiness); and House Judiciary Committee. She is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Women’s Caucus, and the New Democrat Coalition. In addition, Demings is vice chairman of the Gun Violence Prevention Task, recruiting chairman of the Committee on Democratic Congressional Campaigns, and a member of the Task Force on Election Security.

In 2018, she was appointed impeachment chief by the House Speaker, one of only three women to serve in that position. Demings remains active in her community through organizations such as St. Mark AME Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Orlando Chapter of The Links, NAACP, and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.
