Rare Religious Cross Found by Child During School Trip in Jerusalem
While on a class trip to the historic Ein Karem village in Jerusalem, Israel, a 10-year-old discovered an unexpected surprise.
Nehorai Nir was picking edible plants with his class and believed he saw a red pomegranate on the ground.
“I ran to pick it up and discovered a worm inside, so I reluctantly put it down — but on the way back up the hill I suddenly saw a colorful object shining in the dirt,” Nir shared, according to a press release from the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA).
His excitement surged as he recalled, “I pulled it out and was immediately very excited.”
Astonishing Discovery: The Golden Cross Medallion
This serendipitous moment led to the discovery of an intricate golden cross medallion, crafted through a rare micro-mosaic technique. According to the IAA, this remarkable artifact dates back approximately 100 to 200 years, placing it outside the realm of antiques yet still marking it as a noteworthy find.
Dr. Amit Re’em, a Jerusalem district archaeologist with the IAA, elaborated on the craftsmanship involved in the medallion’s creation. “The manufacturing method demanded expert craftsmanship, including setting glass and tiny colorful precious stones, which were meticulously arranged to create intricate miniature patterns,” he explained. This technique, honed in Rome around 1800 and lasting into the early 20th century, speaks volumes about its sophistication.
The Significance of Ein Karem
What makes this beautiful medallion even more significant is its findspot: Ein Karem, a village steeped in Christian history. According to the New Testament, it is recognized as the birthplace of John the Baptist. The narrative records that his mother, Elizabeth, met Mary, the mother of Jesus, by a well in the neighborhood.
At the heart of Ein Karem lie two churches, the Church of the Visitation and the Church of Saint John. These sacred places continue to attract generations of pilgrims, fostering reflection and reverence among visitors.
