Richard Simmons’ Cause of Death: A Heartfelt Revelation
Richard Simmons’ cause of death has been revealed.
The beloved fitness instructor and television personality passed away from blunt traumatic injuries, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday. At 76 years old, his death has been classified as an accident.
Arteriosclerotic cardiovascular complications were noted as a contributing factor.
The tragedy unfolded following a fall on July 11. He spent the next day recuperating in bed. Tragically, on July 13, he was discovered unresponsive on his bedroom floor. Emergency services arrived, but he was pronounced dead on the scene.
After a thorough examination at the department’s Forensic Science Center, the deputy medical examiner issued their findings on July 14, with the official cause of death being certified on August 22.
A complete medical report is expected to be available by August 30, as stated by the medical examiner’s office.
Simmons’ brother, Lenny, received the somber news early Wednesday from the LA Coroner’s office. “They informed Lenny that Richard’s demise resulted from complications due to recent falls, with heart disease inflating the dire straits,” shared spokesperson Estey. The toxicology report confirmed no harmful substances, aside from prescribed medications.
“We truly appreciate the love and compassion everyone has shown during this devastating period,” Estey expressed.
True to her commitment, Teresa Reveles, Simmons’ dedicated caretaker, discovered him on that fateful day. As she found him, she described him as tranquil, which added a layer of heartbreak to the moment. “His hands were clenched into fists,” she recalled, “and I know that meant a heart attack.”
Having suffered a heart attack herself years ago, Reveles drew a connection between their experiences. Just the day before, Simmons had felt discomfort in his leg following a fall. Reveles, concerned, suggested they seek medical attention. “Let’s go to the hospital. Maybe you broke your leg,” she urged. He stubbornly refused, saying, “No, Teresa, not on my birthday; let’s wait until morning.” Sadly, the morning never came.
The final farewell took place five days after his passing. Lenny indicated that Richard was surrounded “only by family and closest friends,” a testament to the love that enveloped him throughout his life.
Having withdrawn from the public eye a decade ago, Simmons had reminded the world in previous interviews of his gratitude for life, especially after a skin cancer diagnosis. “I am grateful that I’m here, that I am alive for another day,” he said, “I’ll spend my birthday doing what I do every day, which is to help people.”

During his rise to fame in the late 1970s, Simmons hosted “The Richard Simmons Show” and charmed audiences through game shows and late-night TV. His “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” workout videos, launched in 1988, became synonymous with feel-good fitness.
As the world wrestles with loss, Richard Simmons remains a symbol of joy and tenacity. His legacy, much like his infectious laughter, will continue to inspire many—an enduring reminder that life is a delicate balance of seeking help and offering it when we can.
