Samantha Harris: A Courageous Return to the Spotlight Amidst Second Breast Cancer Diagnosis
Samantha Harris, the beloved former co-host of “Dancing with the Stars,” recently disclosed that her breast cancer has returned after a decade-long battle with the disease.
On a poignant Wednesday, Harris took to Instagram, sharing a heartfelt video where she revealed her unsettling health news while embracing gratitude for her unwavering support system.
“I have some health news that I need to share that I never thought I would be sharing again in my lifetime, but I have a recurrence of breast cancer,” conveyed Harris, who is now 50 years old. “I feel incredibly fortunate to have guided and supported so many of you in ‘Your Healthiest Healthy’ community. I will continue to do so, and I will fight on. I will be okay.”
In her emotional update, she expressed, “I’m so grateful for my family and my close friends. As I lean on them, I also reach out to lean on you during this time. I will share more as my treatment plan unfolds. I’ll see you soon.”
Facing the Future: Surgery Day Insights
Shortly after her initial video, Harris posted another clip that chronicled the steps leading up to her surgery day. “It is surgery day,” she stated, detailing, “stop number one involves placing a surgical clip into my breast to help guide the surgeon directly to the cancerous tumor and tissue for removal.” She was preparing for a partial mastectomy.
Harris previously uncovered her story of resilience in 2014, when she discovered a lump in her right breast, which turned out to be cancerous. After evaluating her options, she opted for a double mastectomy. Reflecting on that time, she shared, “It felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest. I was done with the feelings that had taken over my life after the diagnosis. I knew I needed to seize control.”

Shared Experiences in the Dance Community
Harris is not alone on this tough path. From 2010 to 2012, she co-hosted alongside Tom Bergeron, and both have witnessed the profound impact cancer has had on members of the “Dancing with the Stars” community. In 2022, fellow alum Witney Carson bravely discussed her close call with her career dreams when she learned of her melanoma diagnosis mere weeks before moving to Los Angeles in 2014.
“I finally received the call that would skyrocket my career,” she recalled. “Then, out of nowhere, I was diagnosed with melanoma. Naturally, I thought, ‘It’s fine. I can still go on the show!’” Carson, who appeared alongside Cody Simpson, admitted to feeling “embarrassed” about her condition, wanting everyone to perceive her as perfectly healthy.
Carson’s experience began at just 19 years old when she was diagnosed with skin cancer. She suggested that her use of tanning beds during high school may have contributed to her condition. Moreover, the presence of melanoma in both her parents’ medical histories reinforces how genetics can influence these battles.
Finding Strength in Vulnerability
For Harris and Carson, their stories underscore a vital lesson: vulnerability often breeds strength. With each shared experience, a tapestry of resilience and hope unfurls, weaving together support networks that offer both solace and encouragement. The moments captured on social media allow their communities to rally, demonstrating an unbreakable spirit among them.
As Harris prepares for her upcoming treatments and surgeries, she embodies not just the resilience of her own journey but also shines a light on how intertwined communities can inspire and uplift each other through shared struggles. While her fans rally with support, Harris reminds them—and herself—that the fight isn’t solitary; it’s a collective endeavor to cherish life, support one another, and create a healthier future.
