After a vote of 3-2 by Keith Williams (the city director for municipal services), Dana Souza was elected interim city manager in Naples.
He succeeds Judith Zimomra. Zimomra had served Sanibel from 2000 to 2000 and retired this week.
After two hours of discussion with Sanibel City Council representatives and the public, Souza was chosen as the first option.
In May, Charles Mason resigned and he was appointed interim Naples city manager. He joined the Naples City Council as Deputy City Manager in 2016.
The new Sanibel manager’s résumé also spans six years on Marco Island, from 2002 to 2008 when he served as the city’s interim city manager after serving as parks and leisure director.

Sousa, prior to his joining Marco, was the Director of Parks, Recreation and Sustainability, Greenville, South Carolina.
After more then an hour of debate among councilors followed by extensive discussion during a period of public comments, Sousa was voted in by Mayor Holly Smith as well as councilors Scott Crater (and John Henshaw).
Mike Miller (City Councilor) and Richard Johnson (Vice Mayor) voted for Keith Williams. Keith Williams is the city’s director, community services. He had encountered some difficulties in recent days after an email campaign suggested he be called “Professional Engineer”.
Johnson and Miller switched to Sousa after the vote was 3-2. This demonstrated the unity of the candidate for manager.
Jeff Durbin was the interim manager in a small town about 120 km west of Denver. He received no votes.

Sousa started his public management career in New Bedford Mass. Portland, Maine. In the middle of 1990s, he was director for parks and recreation at Union, New York. His early career included parks and recreation, as well as other posts in government institutions.
Roger Williams University is his home in Rhode Island. He also holds the University of Central Florida Certificate in Public Administration.
