St. Matthew’s House in Naples Spreads Holiday Cheer by Feeding Hundreds on Christmas!

St. Matthew’s House in Naples feeds hundreds on Christmas, embodying the true spirit of the holiday season. While many local eateries and businesses cherished time with loved ones, this nonprofit dedicated its day to providing warmth and nourishment to those in need in Collier County.

“It makes you feel really good to do something good for other people,” shared Denise Milesky, a passionate volunteer. “Christmas is about helping other people,” she added, her eyes gleaming with genuine emotion.

The atmosphere inside Campbell Lodge Shelter was vibrant yet serene, where volunteers served up over 500 festive meals on Wednesday. The shelter welcomed guests from noon to 4 p.m., transforming its space into a hub of kindness and compassion.

Zachary Miller, the program manager, elaborated on the deeper significance behind this cherished holiday event. “Every single person here has a different story to tell, and they’re all equally important, I believe,” Miller said, radiating empathy. This gathering is not merely about alleviating hunger; it’s about fostering connections and acknowledging humanity.

While many attendees face challenges like hunger and homelessness, Miller pointed out that some visitors aren’t homeless but choose to partake in the holiday spirit and connect with others. “Some of these guys – they are not homeless. They may serve here; they may be very familiar with St. Matthew’s House and just want to come hang out with the residents and get to know them a little better,” he explained.

This event transcends a meal; it’s an opportunity for interaction and support. “Others may be living in the woods, and we don’t know,” he reflected. “But when they come, sit down, and experience community and fellowship, they see there’s a big source of support here. That might open the door for them to say, ‘Hey, maybe I want to stay here and try the program you guys offer.’” These words linger, a reminder of the hidden struggles many face.

For devoted volunteers like Rob Woolley and Denise Milesky, serving on Christmas brings immense fulfillment. “We’ve got quite a few people coming in here; it’s very busy,” Woolley noted with a smile. The hustle of helping, though chaotic, is infused with purpose. “It’s a rewarding thing to do on the holiday.” Milesky chimed in, sharing her perspective on holiday celebrations. “It’s just my husband and me. Making a big dinner for two people doesn’t make sense when I could spend four hours doing something nice for someone else.” Her sentiment resonates, capturing a shared ethos among the volunteers.

St. Matthew’s House consistently thrives on its community spirit, welcoming volunteers who wish to share joy and kindness. The nonprofit is dedicated to extending its hand to anyone in need during every holiday, fostering a culture of compassion that ripples throughout the community.

Interestingly, Naples, a city widely known for its picturesque beaches and affluent lifestyle, also harbors stories of struggle and resilience, reminding everyone that the true essence of the holiday lies in serving others. This Christmas tradition at St. Matthew’s House is not just about feeding the body but nourishing the soul, weaving a tapestry of stories, hope, and connection that defines the human experience.
