Florida Sniper Takes Down Gunman Firing Over 200 Rounds at Condo Complex

Connecticut Man Fatality in Standoff with Florida Law Enforcement

A Connecticut man was shot and killed by a Florida sheriff’s sniper after he allegedly fired more than 200 rounds at neighboring homes and at authorities over several hours on Thursday.

The suspect, identified as Joseph DiFusco, was killed by a sniper with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, but no one else was harmed, the sheriff’s office said.

Background of the Incident

At 56 years old, DiFusco was visiting Florida, a common retreat for snowbirds escaping the harsh winters. Sheriff Mike Chitwood noted that he possibly brought firearms from Connecticut, seeking refuge in an Airbnb during his stay. In a cruel twist of fate, this temporary home turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy.

Responding to DiFusco’s earlier complaint of suicidal thoughts around 4 a.m., deputies found themselves quickly drawn into a volatile situation as he later opened fire on neighboring units and law enforcement officers.

“He probably fired over 200 rounds,” Chitwood commented. “You could hear bullets whizzing over our heads, and we were 100 yards back,” a chilling description that underscores the terrifying reality faced by those nearby.

Negotiations Turn Fatal

Deputies had already made three visits to the Kingston Shores condominium complex. Yet each effort to coax DiFusco into a dialogue was met with hostility; he would respond with gunfire, refusing to communicate. It became painfully clear that he was determined to resist any attempts to de-escalate.

Volusia County Sheriff's Office deputies

Chitwood remarked, “He was not going to negotiate. Every time we would try to negotiate, he would fire on us. He turned off his phone. He was armed to the teeth.” Such statements evoke a sense of helplessness against a psychological battle unfolding not just within DiFusco, but in the hearts of those desperately attempting to protect their community.

Evacuations occurred swiftly, as frightened neighbors fled the area. Chitwood noted that DiFusco’s family had contacted authorities beforehand, expressing genuine fears for their safety and describing a harrowing situation where they sought refuge in their car to escape his wrath.

Family members reported he had stopped taking his medication and hadn’t slept for days, revealing the escalating internal struggle that likely precipitated this tragic chain of events.

Walls filled with bullet holes

As images were released showing walls of the complex riddled with bullet holes, it served as a stark reminder of the day’s events. The ordeal stretched over five harrowing hours, culminating in DiFusco barricading himself in the rental unit, heavily armed with at least three firearms.

This incident not only highlighted serious concerns about mental health and access to weapons but also left an indelible mark on the community that would likely take years to heal. In vivid contrast to the serenity expected from a Florida escape, the violence disrupted lives, leading one to reflect on the fragile line that separates normalcy from chaos.
