SWFL Shines as Local Athletes Commit to Power 4 Programs During Early Signing Period

Several Southwest Florida stars are signing with Power 4 programs this Early Signing Period, marking a pivotal moment in their athletic journeys.

Myron Charles: From Port Charlotte to the Lone Star State

The journey begins in Charlotte County, where Myron Charles, a four-star defensive tackle from Port Charlotte, is set to bring his talents to the University of Texas at Austin. His enthusiasm is palpable as he looks forward to joining a team filled with formidable players.

A Commitment Worth Waiting For

“I’m coming in with a lot of dogs that contributed a lot this year and next year I get to play with them,” Charles said, his excitement bubbling over. During his senior year, he showcased immense skill, achieving 43 total tackles, eight of which were tackles for loss. The 6’4” defensive powerhouse had many options from different Division I schools, ultimately choosing Texas after his previous commitment to Florida State. He recalls the relentless communication from Coach Kenny and his staff, which displayed genuine interest not just in him, but in his entire family. “The communication never stopped. They were recruiting my family,” he noted thoughtfully.

Darrion Jones: A Brave Leap to the Jayhawks

In Cape Coral, safety Darrion Jones is trading in his Seahawks jersey for the colors of the University of Kansas. With a three-star rating, his commitment reflects not just growth in skill but resilience through adversity.

The Power of a Support System

“I always had it hard coming up playing football, being called overrated,” Jones shared, a hint of determination in his voice. Over two seasons, he racked up 62 total tackles for the Seahawks, including an impressive 22 solo tackles in just seven games during his senior year. The geographical distance between Cape Coral and Lawrence doesn’t deter him; he emphasizes the unwavering support from his loved ones. “My support system has been high since I was growing up,” he said, gratefully anticipating their presence when it matters most.

First Baptist Academy: Raising the Bar

First Baptist Academy boasts two remarkable athletes advancing to the Division I level. Bradley Martino, a three-star athlete, is bound for Minnesota to join the Golden Gophers.

A Dream Realized

Martino reflects on his journey with passion: “I’ve waited for this day for 17 years living on this earth.” He has faced uncertainty along the way, including doubts after coaches were fired during his freshman year at Palmetto. Yet, he persisted. “I can’t give up on the dream I’ve had ever since I was a kid.” He feels a deep affection for Minnesota, likening it to Florida, and he is eager to contribute under Coach Fleck’s guidance.

Logan Bartley: The Next Chapter with the Wildcats

Completing the FBA trio, three-star safety Logan Bartley prepares to join the Kansas State Wildcats. His connection to his coaches and the school environment fuels his excitement.

The Emotion of Change

“It means a lot,” Bartley remarked, his sentiment reflecting the hard work and dedication he has put in. At First Baptist Academy since first grade, he is ready for the challenge ahead. “It’s going to be surreal,” he said, looking forward to establishing himself at K State. The wide-ranging experience from his time at FBA has equipped him for this new beginning.

Additionally, rounding out First Baptist Academy’s impressive class, Devin Imburgia signed to play Division III football at Franklin and Marshall. Each of these athletes showcases not just their skills on the field but also the relentless spirit that Southwest Florida nurtures. They remind us that dreams, while requiring hard work and dedication, are always within reach—proving that a community’s pride, love, and support are just as vital as the game itself.

Fun fact: Southwest Florida is home to over 50,000 youth football players, showcasing the strong culture and community support for burgeoning talent in the region.
