Punta Gorda police cracking down on navigation light violations

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – Several quotes were given to boaters in Punta Gorda yesterday, January 19.

Police officers from the Punta Gorda Police Department take action against ships with defective boat lights.

Boats less than 16 feet in length must transmit at least 3 visual distress signals approved for nighttime use in coastal waters from sunset to sunrise, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Ships that are 16 feet or longer must always transmit at least 3 day and three night distress signals (or 3 combined day / night signals) in coastal waters.

Both federal and state laws mandate the use of navigation lights from sunset to sunrise.
