Labor Day generally celebrates the nobility of labor in spirit only: We’re chilling for the holiday.
Still, among the coming weekend’s lists of events in Southwest Florida, there are several tributes to hard work. Hospitality employees get a discount at Whiskey Park on Saturday; farmworkers have a friend in a Sunday event to call attention to their COVID-19 vulnerability.
It’s a big weekend for other reasons, too. There are celebrations for you if you are a craft beer connoisseur, or treasure Southwest Florida’s critical mangrove and sea life — or want to learn about them:
- Lee County is participating in Southwest Florida Craft Beer Week, with events like the release of Fort Myers Brewing Co.’s new specialty beer: White Grape Saison. Our favorite: the introduction of four new sour beers from Riptide Brewing Co. in its Bonita Springs location. They’re paired with tarts and pastries from Mikkelsen’s Pastry Shops in Naples. That’s noon-7 p.m. Sunday Sept. 5.
- It’s National Estuaries Celebration month, and Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve has something planned for nearly every day leading up to Sept. 25, National Estuaries Day. The party starts this weekend with discounts on its popular narrated water tours.
Warning: One thing that isn’t happening this weekend is Collier County resident free admission weekend at Naples Zoo. Because of the holiday, that will be moved to Sept. 10-11.
