National Geographic released its annual “Best of the World” travel list for 2025.
Out of the 25 global destinations, three U.S. locations made the cut: Florida’s Ocala National Forest, Boise, Idaho, and Los Angeles, California.
Exploring Unique American Gems
Ocala National Forest stands out as one of Florida’s “last wild places.” Unlike typical Florida attractions like bustling theme parks or endless beaches, this forest is a serene escape. It’s a place where nature reigns supreme—a “green oasis” nestled in the southernmost reaches of the U.S.
The sprawling 387,000 acres boast diverse wildlife, including elusive black bears, gentle manatees, and rare plants, along with over 600 lakes and natural springs, highlights NatGeo. This picturesque environment invites travelers to lose themselves in tranquil reflections, with every winding trail evoking thoughts of nature’s quiet strength.
Moreover, the National Forest Foundation has taken steps to enhance outdoor experiences here with new fishing piers and improved hiking paths, all while working to rejuvenate the longleaf pine ecosystem. This labor of love celebrates the natural beauty that so many visitors never experience while rushing to the coast.
The Artistic Pulse of Los Angeles
Los Angeles, often lauded for its stunning scenery, has recently evolved into a vibrant canvas of artistic expression. According to NatGeo, the city’s cultural landscape is receiving a significant boost. One noteworthy project is Destination Crenshaw, the largest public/private Black art program in the U.S. that transforms a 1.3-mile stretch of Crenshaw Boulevard into a stunning showcase of community and creativity.
Beyond this, significant expansions are underway at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The David Geffen Galleries, set to unveil in April 2026, promise to enhance the city’s artistic narrative. In Exposition Park, the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will present an array of remarkable works amassed by George Lucas. This cultural renaissance invites art aficionados to engage with the soul of Los Angeles, leaving them contemplative and inspired.
Boise: The Heart of Basque Heritage
In the heart of Idaho, Boise emerges as a remarkable locale, celebrated for its significant Basque population, the largest in the United States. Their legacy, originally rooted in sheep herding brought forth by Spanish and French migrants in the late 19th century, remains alive and vibrant.
Now, Boise pays tribute to this rich heritage with the Jaialdi festival, one of the largest Basque celebrations globally. Scheduled for July 2025, after a decade-long hiatus, it will transform the Basque Block into a lively hub filled with street parties, music, and an array of cultural performances. Events such as Sports Night, with competitions in wood chopping and wagon lifting, connect past traditions with present-day festivities, inviting observers to ponder the blend of family, culture, and community.
“We have amazing international adventures,” he reflected, “but these three U.S. locations prove that unforgettable experiences lie just around the corner.” Every journey becomes a tapestry woven with emotions, memories, and the beauty of places that deserve more than just a fleeting glance.
