A new study has revealed which cities in America are the best places to ring in the New Year, and some spots might surprise you.
WalletHub released its list of the most fun and affordable cities in the U.S. after conducting research across all 50 states in the categories of entertainment and food, cost, safety, and accessibility.
Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, shared in a press release, “Celebrating New Year’s Eve in the right city can turn the holiday into a truly magical experience.”
“The best cities for New Year’s celebrations have clear skies and some of the best fireworks displays around,” noted Lupo.
He added, “The top cities also offer an abundance of highly-rated, affordable dining options, along with a vibrant nightlife and plenty of activities to make your entry into the new year a memorable one.”
The report indicates that over 128 million people will travel for the New Year holiday this year, with 65% driving to their destination, evoking a sense of camaraderie on the open roads.
Did your city make the list? Here’s the countdown.
5. Chicago, Illinois
4. San Diego, California
In a city known for its sun-kissed beaches, San Diego claims the fourth position. This West Coast gem boasts the lowest chance of rain on New Year’s Eve, making it a desirable destination for celebrations.
San Diego offers a plethora of highly-rated and reasonably priced restaurants, giving diners plenty of options to indulge in before the midnight countdown. The city also ranks impressively for its abundance of party supply shops, which mirrors the explosive enthusiasm locals have for celebrating.
3. Orlando, Florida
When it comes to finding festive warmth, Orlando, Florida, takes the prize at number three. This vibrant city is celebrated for its remarkable fireworks displays—among the longest in the nation. The legal status of consumer fireworks means that families can often create their own jubilant displays in their backyards. It’s the kind of warmth and spirited festivity that echoes throughout the streets and laughter of all who visit.
2. Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas sparkles at number two, where the party never stops. The city’s dazzling lights and energetic atmosphere create an alluring backdrop for those eager to ring in the New Year. As the first city to adopt a fireworks safety protocol, Las Vegas prioritizes guest safety while ensuring the night sky bursts with color and excitement.
1. New York, New York
Unsurprisingly, New York City stands tall as the pinnacle for New Year’s Eve celebrations. The iconic ball drop in Times Square epitomizes the essence of this holiday, drawing in crowds that surpass a million. The energy of the Big Apple is simply unmatched, a swirling celebration of hope and renewal, as each gelid moment leads up to midnight.
Ranking first in the number of dining establishments, New York is home to an array of options, from food trucks to high-end restaurants. The city also claims the title as the most affordable destination for eateries boasting a 4.5-star rating. New Yorkers relish what many would call the best therapy: conviviality over a delicious meal.
As the world readies itself to welcome another chapter, these cities invite everyone to celebrate in their unique ways. Whether one is swaying on the streets of Chicago or gathering around a table in a cozy San Diego restaurant, this is the season to cherish shared moments, joy, and, above all, the magic that New Year’s brings.
