Discover the Best US States for Hitting the Gold Jackpot!

A new report reveals the best states where Americans can most likely find gold in the ground.

SD Bullion, a U.S.-based bullion dealer, analyzed data from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Mineral Resources Program.

The dealing company looked at locations nationwide where gold ore has been found or produced as a commodity.

Chase Turner, CEO of SD Bullion, stated in a press release that the findings indicate where the chances of discovering gold are significantly higher.

“These regions, highlighted by their favorable geological conditions and rich mining histories, emerge as exceptional destinations for gold exploration. The data provides valuable insights into gold deposit distributions, spotlighting key areas for both amateur prospectors and experienced miners,” said Turner.

Across the nation, only 32 states were identified as having gold ore present or currently producing gold.

Below, discover the top five states to strike gold, according to SD Bullion.

Where to find gold in the United States

Finding Gold: The Shimmering Opportunities in the U.S.

California

California lives up to its nickname with 10,373 recorded locations for gold discovery or production. SD Bullion notes an impressive 66.59 gold sites per 1,000 square miles. The state’s history echoes with tales of fortune-seekers, and each winter, thousands flock to “Coloma Gold Rush Live,” an event at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, where they can immerse themselves in the vibrant re-creation of an 1850s tent town.

Washington

Next, Washington might be the underdog in size, but it surprises with 2,271 gold locations noted by SD Bullion, translating to 34.17 gold sites for every 1,000 square miles. This state, with its lush green landscapes, hides treasures beneath the surface, tempting prospectors to wander its vast terrains.

Oregon

Oregon stands out with 3,015 unique sites where gold has been found, boasting 31.41 locations per 1,000 square miles within its sprawling 95,988-square-mile area. This state invites adventurers to unearth its secrets and perhaps strike gold amidst its breathtaking scenery.

Nevada

Famed for its mining heritage, Nevada holds 3,393 locations where gold is discovered or produced, averaging 30.91 spots per 1,000 square miles. The Fort Churchill State Historic Park hosts engaging “Gold Fever” programs, drawing thrill-seekers and history enthusiasts alike to pan for their own golden nuggets.

Idaho

Idaho rounds out the list with 28.44 gold locations per 1,000 square miles, framing 2,350 places where gold has been unearthed or is being produced. With its rugged mountains, Idaho has drawn prospectors seeking fortune for generations. The state’s mineral-rich landscape tantalizes with the promise of hidden treasures just below the surface.

Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Alaska, and Utah also significantly contribute to the rich tapestry of gold discovery opportunities across the nation. Each state holds its own stories, history, and potential for those daring enough to pursue gold.

The information was gathered via the US Geological Survey’s Mineral Resources Data System. Data filtering included only those locations reporting gold ore or actual gold production, leading to a total captured under each state, legally venturing into the depths of the earth for the precious metal.

Interested adventurers should keep in mind that historical mining areas, particularly in California and Nevada, aren’t just great for finding gold; they enchant visitors with tales of grit and determination, offering a glimpse into the audacious spirit that lives on in the heart of every prospector.
