TSA Unveils the Most Bizarre Items Discovered at Airport Security in 2024!

Many Americans flew across the U.S. in 2024.

While travelers tend to factor in the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) restrictions while packing their bags, some might forget or even try to sneak items slip through the airport screening process.

TSA shared a video and press release showcasing some of the “best catches” confiscated over the last year.

“They also represent the kinds of items that cause delays in checkpoints,” said the spokesperson.

In 2024, TSA unveiled some rather peculiar attempts at bypassing security. At Newark International Airport, a traveler from Mississippi thought he was clever by hiding a disassembled 9mm firearm within a Lego box. Concealing the gun frame under a stuffed sock at the bottom of a boot, he likely didn’t anticipate the scrutiny of the security officers.

As TSA officials described, “The gun’s slide, spring, and magazine loaded with 12 bullets were detected mixed among the plastic pieces of a Black Panther LEGO set.” A daring attempt, but also a startling reminder of the lengths to which some will go.

North Carolina’s Asheville Regional Airport revealed its own unusual incident when agents discovered marijuana tucked away in a peanut butter container, shared through an Instagram post by TSA on March 1. The creativity here raises questions about just how far users will go to mask prohibited items.

And in February, a passenger at Chicago Midway International Airport attempted to disguise a vape pen cleverly inside a toothpaste tube, prompting TSA to cheekily caption their Instagram update, “9 out of 10 dentists do not recommend.” They even added, “Seems like they wanted to add a dash of minty-coolness to their traveling experience.” Here, humor blended with a stark reality—attempting to smuggle items inevitably leads to uncomfortable interactions with security.

In November, a glaring oversight emerged as a passenger at William B. Hobby International Airport in Houston tried to stash a firearm in the back pocket of a baby stroller. TSA did not hesitate, humorously posting, “Houston Airport, we definitely have a problem…” highlighting the absurdity of the situation.

Miami International Airport saw an even more outrageous scenario in late April when a man attempted to sneak live snakes through security, boldly hiding them in his pants. It’s a peculiar yet profound reminder of just how adventurous (and misguided) some travelers can be.

“Transportation Security Officers at airport checkpoints are really good at stopping [prohibited items] from entering the secure side of airports and in the passenger cabins of commercial airplanes,” a TSA spokesperson reiterated. It’s an encouragement for all travelers to take heed, rather than testing the bounds of creativity regarding security compliance.

Safe Travel Alleviation: TSA’s Tips for Smooth Security Procedures

Firearms require special attention—they must be in checked baggage, “properly packed and declared to the airline at check-in, which means unloaded and in a locked, hard-sided case.”

If travelers find themselves unsure of the regulations, they can refer to the “What Can I Bring?” link on TSA’s website for guidance. It’s a valuable resource to prevent mishaps at checkpoints.

Catches range from live snakes to a dissembled gun in a Lego box.

All travelers should have their valid ID within easy reach, while electronics, such as phones, should be removed from pockets and placed in bins. This simple action can significantly streamline the process.

Moreover, the “3-1-1 rule” applies to liquids: each item must be 3.4 ounces or less, all contained in a one-quart-sized bag, with one bag per traveler. It’s a minimal effort for maximum compliance.

TSA PreCheck eligibility further expedites the screening process at select airports, ensuring a less stressful experience for many frequent flyers.

Real-time assistance is available through TSA’s social media accounts or by calling their contact center at 866-289-9673, allowing travelers to address concerns promptly and ensure smooth sailing through security checkpoints.
