MARCO ISLAND, Florida – Two summer camps on Marco Island will close after 5 children test positive for COVID-19.
The city’s “Camp Mackle” program for grades 1 to 5 and “Camp Stellar” for grades 6 to 8 are canceled until August 2. All five positive cases came from Camp Mackle, which has over 45 children.
Last year all camps were canceled. That year, they returned on June 14th with COVID logs.
Unvaccinated camp leaders must wear masks. They are not required for campers. Campers are often asked to wash their hands and are not allowed to share food or drinks.
Still, on Monday, July 19, two siblings tested positive for COVID at Camp Mackle. The city announced that parents from both camps had been notified the next morning.
Another camper tested positive on Wednesday. On Thursday evening, two other siblings learned that they had been infected with the virus.
Along with the camp closings on Friday, the city also closed Mackle Park to thoroughly clean up the community center.
The park will reopen on Monday, July 26th. The city will consider introducing temperature controls for mourning when camps are reopened.
Parks and Rec said anyone who prepaid for camp next week will be refunded.
